Maybe you TKD people can educate the rest of us a bit more……
The grappling, BJJ, high kicking debates often focus on TKD or vs TKD!
So what else does TKD have apart from high kicking?
And more interestingly ;) How would you manage against the BJJ guy especially in the all too common situation when they couldn’t risk fighting on the ground!? :D

simple puting TKD is an art which uses hands n feet techniques.
<So what else does TKD have apart from high kicking? >
ok i wont' say from everyone but FOR MYSELF only.
1. there r punches/elbows/knees/headbutt.
2. sparring(yea u know that too), full contact, no rules too...
3. precise discussion of principle envolved in every move, so we end up learning principles n techniques too, with most of why's/how's solved by my teacher.
4. precise discussoin of power generation at any given point, we even discuss Bruce lee's 1inch punch or no distance punch or u can say we learn punching n kicking from watever position we are
sitting/laying/standing...
5. enviornmental training.
6. hosin suls(self defense techs)
7. grappling n anti grappling moves against styles like aikido/judo/some wrestling too
8. awareness drills/training.
9. good discussion of pressure point.
this had been added lately by my teacher(because students weren't intrested in weapons, he started because of my pressuring him 2 yrs back)
10. weapon defenses, before jumping on him lemme tell u that he hav went against weapons like knife n sticks/clubs/bats etc n got out without hurt or very little hurt.
and my teacher is Pure TKDist but hav faught against most of styles dominated here like Judo/wrestling/karate/etc
if u r around my area the first place for MA i'll suggest u is my teachers class...

well there is NO BJJ here... but u know street is too hard for them to go on ground too they even hav chances of getting hurt on ground... if they r in standup grappling we hav much better chance...
and even in situation which r not favoring we try to fight on our +ve not on my oppnt's ... we(me n my teacher) hav tried TKD against Judo, boxers, JKD(he claimed that he did jkd n he was good with no nonsense attitude), wrestlers, aikido, bit of crap kungfu(see my other thread about crap TKDkungfu) with very high results in my favor...
one thing which i hate is TKD officially doesn't hav weapon system which does bores me a bit... but i'll say i even understand lots of Taichi/Kungfu concepts thru TKD...

This BJJ thing I think is overrated seriously speaking I'd rather be a TKDist than a grappler if I were to fight with someone and choose only one thing

I do TKD to keep fit and learn an art that allows me to do full contact kicks to the body and head, makes me VERY flexible and teaches me some sweeeet kicks.
I'd rather spend 4 years learning that than how to hog-tie some guy who attacks me.
I've never been picked on or anything like that, so i wanted to learn something 'cool'. For me the WTF sparring is the best, going all out giving your opponent everything and him the same and no have any broken bones. Plus if someone says 'Show me some BBJ' you can put them in a ass-lock or whatever, but when people ask me to show them TKD and i do a spinning heel-kick at face hight without warming up, they're like 'Wuuuuuuhoooo damn!'.
Oh and if a BBJ guy came for me i would wait for him. Good luck trying to cross the distance when my practised back-kick is there, same with front leg sidekick stop.
I'll maybe get attacked a couple times in my life at most, but for the other 99.999999999% of times im not, i got TKD =)

People who think TKD people can't defend themselves in a "Real" fight, are just plain Ignorant.....Period!
You choose to look at our kicks and say "Hmm, you would neva B able to use those in a real fight", and frankly I believe people say that because there jealous of how good we can kick, back spinning kicks, 360's what ever.
The truth is, a skillfull TKD practitioner has an arsenal of lethal and deadly strikes. Consisting of basic kicks, which have been implanted so intensly in to the students mind that over time they become second nature. Kicks such as the front kick, side kick, and even the back kick. And you bet your ass we can use them in a real fight, but you should hope we don't.
I honestly and whole heartedly believe that if you Master TKD, you will never need to grapple on the ground with anyone.

True that labatt.
My teacher always says, it doesnt matter who they are or if they do kung fu or anything, you throw a hard kick it will still connect...ribs are ribs and they crack.
I know what you mean about the jelousy, I used to teach some TKD to 15yr olds at my college in my free lessons (they learn Judo for sports education) and the teacher asked me and some friends to teach TKD.
We'd normally teach 2 classes and have 1 hour free afterwards, so we'd be messing around or streching for the extra hour. And their was a student teacher who did Kung Fu, and whenever i did a 540 kick or 360 or anything like that, he'd be like 'You cant beat anyone in a fight like that....'
I said, i know....but those are hard ass kicks to do and im throwing them fast at head-hight. I said my basic kicks are much faster, much more powerful and you wouldnt wanna be on the end of one =)
Actually one of the best demonstrations of TKD's power i did was when we had some Hogoo's (body protectors) in the 6th form octagon. (6th form is final years in college) (Octagon is the recreation room thats shaped like a UFC ocatgon =)).
Basically someone got on 2 body protectors on top of each other, thinking that, and like everyone was saying 'You cant feel the kicks through a protector'...
But he did...he plays rugby and he was winded =D And my 360 hurt as much (if not more) than any other kick we did on him (poor colin). And that was through 2 protectors :D. We actually filmed it, and i got it on my comp, but its like 4mb and im too lazy to upload it =p

hmm personally i don't like 360 540 kicks even for showing off. i prefer my 0 inch punch for shows... i did this to lots of my TC juniors :D n showed them wat is TC :)
