Ok I am 17 and losing my hair... The middle part of my hair from my forehead to the top of my head is pretty thin and the rest of my hair isn't all that thick either.
What can I do? I don't know if being bald would be such a big deal to me but I don't like how it looks right now and lots of people poke fun at it/when I meet new people they always ask me about it. I have patches that you can see scalp and others that are just thin and windy.
My hair is also very greasy even after I wash it every morning with shampoo and conditioner.
I am willing to try pretty much anything as long as there is proof that it works.

1. stop using shampoo/soaps
2. eat more vegetables/fruits
3. drink lots of water...
now comes the therapy part.
well i hav two sure shot methods? u need proof?well i can say girls get jealous just by my hair ;) :D
1. steaming
ok this part strengthens the hair root thus stopping the hair loss.
u need to do at most 3 times a week. before bath.
~first luke warm some oil n massage it on ur scalp
~ then wet ur towel in hot water(enuff hot to feel u to take it away but u hav to be presistent, that doesn't mean u hav to put it in boiling water :D, enuff so that ur head can take)
~ now take that hot towel(water shouldn't be dripping) n wrap it around ur head so that it covers all ur hair part.
~ repeat this at least for 5-6 times
2. Natural Shampoo part :D
u need yellow clay(well it's called "Multani Mitti(clay)" in india)
2 table spoonfull of curd
that's it...
first u hav to put some pieces of yellow clay in water so that it becomes a mixture n can be applied easily on ur head... then add some curd n mix it well...
apply on ur hair(wet hair) before bath. let it dry for 5-6 minutes n then rinse ur hair.
this mixture can be applied daily in place of shampoo/hair conditioners. it doesn't hav side effect because NO CHEMICALS
now some info on Yellow clay(Multani mitti)
ok it's a clay first, sort of hard clay but when u put it in water it becomes soft n get mix with water(universal solvent ;))
tho give me some time to find the exact name of it...till then do steaming part :)

Not that it makes it any better, but it is normal to start losing your hair from about 17 onwards. My brother started going thin on top from about 17 too. He used to wear a hat, and cut it very short so it doesn't notice as much. Its slowed down now though (he's 24) and he's not loosing as much as he was.
As for it being greasy, you may be overwashing it. Try and use a gentle shampoo (maybe even baby shampoo) and use a little as possible to clean it. Also, Like TKDW said, eat plenty of fruit and veg and drink water. Your hair needs nutrients too.
I don't think there's a whole lot you can do it stop it. I think its genetic, so blame your dad :D What you shouldn't do is backcomb what you've got left to cover the balding patch. It may be better to go for a drastic option and crop it altogether, it may look neater. Beside which, plenty of women actually like guys with no hair. Look at Vin Diesel....
Brad Ellin

K-girl is correct, it's genetic. Not much you can do too prevent it. However, by following her's and TkdWarrior's suggestions, you can make what you have left last a bit longer. Personally, I'd go for the cropped haircut. Or shave. Lots of tough looking, attractive ( at least my wife says they are) guys with little or no hair. Vin Diesel, Ed Harris to name a few.

01-Mar-2003, 05:31 AM
oh yea Vin Disel actually look pretty cool... but i know i won't look with bald head :D... so i can't loose my hair
anyways my methods r giving ur hair complete nutrients.
there can be others reasons for hair loss too ie Tension, too much work etc etc.
there r other methods which works too but i think u don't need more than 2.
anyways don't worry... it's physocoligcal for a man(young) to worry about 2 things in his life, his hair and -------------- ;)
u can't avoid it :D

2 questions:
1. How is steam supposed to "strengthen" the hair root? That doesn't make any sense.
2. So what is in yellow clay if there's no chemicals? What is the active ingredient that makes your hair good?
I'm not saying you don't have lovely hair - just a bit sceptical about how you get it. Plus you might have some marketing problems "yellow mud hair products - because I'm worth it".
TkdWarrior
01-Mar-2003, 09:52 AM
not steam doesn't strengthen but the oil n massage does and by the nourishing of hair.
tho steaming removes dandruffs, split hair problems too...
Yellow mud is just a type of sand/mud no chemicals, it's found in nature not made in factory. the main ingredients it mud/sand itself n curd. that's it. n it actually works as shampoo/conditioner.
i know i'll hav marketing problems with this kind of attitude wat i told u guys comes from indian house hold therapies(from ayurveda) it's said that mud actually hav some medics power in it.
who knows. i hav used both n hav good results so does lots of my friends too.
if i know it completely i would been selling cosmetics products by now ;) hey Shenaz hussain does...she hav one of biggest cosmetics range in herbal/natural products all over the world. she too uses the mud...
it's good to be skeptic Fluffy as i told u i can't help much over that.
because i hav been born n raised in traditional family i know these stuff, i know more than Basic Aid(except for surgeory i can handle most situations) but my problem is i can give u name of herbs in hindi/or my own dialect.

Interesting comments by a few of you about the clay not containing chemicals etc... What do you think it's made of then?
TKD you'll have a very hard time getting your point across because this sort of stuff is outside the realm of most peoples perception of scientific "fact" ;)
Interesting stuff though.
Brad Ellin
01-Mar-2003, 11:38 AM
Well, if it's yellow mud it most likely has high sulfur content, and sulfur is used as an anti-biotic and a nutrient.
Just a thought.

Interesting Kurohana, just a little thought and investigation can easily change peoples perception of fact and fiction.

hmm intresting point kuro.... may be that's why...
the mud is yellowish kind may be that's the reason

hmmm shaving my head... not too big on that idea. I will try to use less shampoo and eat more nutrients though.
any other ideas?

A friend of mine once went without shampooing his hair for a month. He rinsed it with plain water. Claimed that shampooing stripped his hair of it's natural protective oils. Whether it worked or not, I don't know. But, it did make him smell funny for a month, I don't think you want to go there.

Also, you may notice from my picture, I have what my friends refer to as an accelerating forehead, but my wife refers to it as my brains getting to big for my head. At one point I was bet a $100 that I would not get a hair cut (had a 6 inch pony tail at the time), not only did I get it cut, but I got it cut short. 1/4 inch all over. Looked good, and took attention away from my large forehead.

Hey r4bid,
I'd give all my hair to be 17 again.
I say shave it now and get used to it. Loads of girls think a shaved head is sexy, but there's nothing worse than a 'baldy in denial'.

01-Mar-2003, 05:37 PM
Heh Andy wanna trade?
But in all seriousness I just don't think that my body type would work well with a shaved head. I am pretty wide sholdered and have really light blonde hair (whats left of it). I am going to try to photoshop a picture of myself so I have a shaved head and pass it by a few people to get their opinions I guess.
Anyone know anything about Rogaine or hair transplants?
morphus
01-Mar-2003, 09:25 PM
I know all about it - i had long(beatle/oasis length) blonde hair till i was about 26yrs then it started going, so i started having it cut shorter, changing the ratio(less on the sides, longer on top) once i hit 30yrs even when i had it cut that way it didn't make it look how i wanted.
I used to love my hair but, i just had to accept being thin on top - it was hard at times nearly driving me to tears.
And it's definately true some women prefere a shaved head.
In the long run it has no(and don't let it) effect on who you are!
One plus is, it can seem to outsiders that you have more credability as a martial artist because you look the part(This does not mean you are the part) ;)

DUDE BALDNESS IS IN MAN!! Syke :D well if anyone says anything to you if all your hair falls out just tell them that you go it cut :/

Rogaine, seems to work AS LONG AS YOU ARE TAKING IT. You stop, you continue going bald. Transplants, a few years ago my roommate got it done. Left an ugly scar and did not look very natural. But, different doctors, different results.
Kurohana is right, transplants deinfitley aint the way to go. Crop it and see how it looks. It grows back quite fast after being cut short. If you hate it as much as you say you do, then cutting it short is the best solution. Every guy starts balding at some point, and the least attractive thing you can do is try and hide it (believe me, its a big turn off).
My brother lost his hair because he was ill, and just cropped it off. He's a big shouldered fella with blond hair, (like you described yourself) and it looked fine on him. I seriously recommend trying it out, it will grow back. It can't be as bad as going through painful surgery. PM me if you want to chat some more :)
Sarah
Just fight it by growing it long on one side then comb it over the top and hold it in place with gell... :P
I too once had mighty locks until about 26 then.... zoom zoom! (You and me Morph!)

Hair loss is currently thought to be caused by dihydrotestosterone collecting around hair roots and inflaming them. There's percutaneous treatments that can treat this without the systemic affects of Rogaine, but once again, the preservative effect will stop when you do. No real permanent solution to hair loss besides shaving.

Exactly, I don't know why people are worrying, just grow it to about a foot in length a one side and sweep it over each morning. Theres no problem exept for the large cost of hair spray.
Guy I used to work with did that, and it gave a beautifully natural windswept look, unless it was windy in which case it looked like somebody had gone into his head with a Katana! :D

Is the hair loss patchy? If so there could be a medical reason for it. Started a new course of drugs recently? (legal or illegal - you don't need to answer!!!) Also certain medical conditions can have that effect as can lack of nutrients. I'd reccomend you go to see a doctor about it either way...just to be sure.
How about the other men in your family, have they suffered the same thing? These things are quite hereditary normally

Cougar, take a look back, I didn't suggest taking Rogaine, I said "Rogaine, seems to work AS LONG AS YOU ARE TAKING IT. You stop, you continue going bald". Personally, I don't/won't condone taking drugs for purposes of recreation or vanity. If it's hereditay, there is not a whole lot you can do. If it's not hereditay, see a doctor or a nutritionist, and found out if it's medical or stress or something that can be dealt with.
My problem is losing my hair. Mine is going grey. And I earned every single one of them (3 daughters!)

lol.
I mean it took nearly 2 years to grow my hair long.
I guess that means that I'm getting old at the age of 17:D. I want to say this but it may not be such a hot idea but here goes anyway....get rid of your hair and become a Rock/heavy metal fan:) just a suggestion.

I couldn't believe it when somebody told me he was bold! I mean, it looks like such a natural, perfect head of hair! I'm sure the style will be back in fashion soon anyway, because it just looks so good!
I just have normal shortish hair, most of the time. Why is this hair style shunned at rock/metal places. This image thing is all so false I think. :woo:

Hey, I was trying to remember this, and finally found it --
The best thing to use with 1-test to prevent hair loss is a topical antiandrogen like spironolactone or flutamide. Nizoral shampoo is also an excellant addition
They're talking about topical DHT blockers because they don't work systemically. Since DHT is a naturally occuring, highly anabolic (as well as androgenic) hormone, you probably don't want to block it systemically if you're a man. The shampoo might be a better bet.
