Morning MApers!

A Friend of mine was telling me yesterday that they were thinking about going on a Pure protein diet for a couple of weeks, just to try and loose a little excess fat.

They went on to tell me the ins and outs of it, and I just smiled and took the info in.

But not really knowing too much about this, I thought a few people on this board maybe able to enlighten me with a little more info about it?

Thanks

I've had friends of mine do this diet and swear by it. They have lost a lot of weight doing it but I question how good it is for you. I have been told that overloading your body with too much protein is actually bad for the condition of your muscles (I'm sure Yoda will know all about it). I guess it might not be too bad if it's for a limited time only but I'm VERY cautious about these diets - it may help short term, but what about the long run?

I don't know about it being bad for muscles but it can be very bad for your kidneys (or it might be liver I always get them mixwd up). To keep the fat off you have to modify your normal diet or burn more energy (get more exercise) each day. I have seen people on this diet loose several stones in the course of a couple of months, they say about 2 pounds a week is a safe level of weight loss.

So what foods would you eat/cut out on this diet?

I don't think I've been on anything near a good diet, so this one can't be much worse for me! ;)

I don't understand why you would want to do it?

If you want to loose weight reduce your calorie intake so you burn more than you consume. And keep the amount of fat you eat to a reasonable level.

There is only so much protien your body can handle without either wasting the excess protien or turning it into fat.

A well balanced diet is a much better option. 1g of good quailty protien per 1Kg of weight, calorie intake to suit your weight loss plan and no foods with more than 10% fat in this.

Though if your looking to put on lean weight, you'll need more protien and calories, but again not excessive amounts.

I'm sure Yoda will have a text book perfect answer for you :D

I could do with a diet to loose weight. Problem is I just drink too much lager, then had a curry last night :(

Probably be the same tonight and tomorrow ;) I don't know how so many MA's show so much restraint and stick to a good healthy diet........

It's hard, very hard!! but luckily I have the support of Yoda and others, who are all trying to diet along with me to make it easier.

I try not to go to the pub or eat out too often as I know my will power will disappear and I'll end up having a top beer and curry session :D

I am not too bad, I love food, I really do and could eat a whole cow if it was cooked and put in front of me, but drinking, I like it, but I can live without it and don't really do it too often either.

Thanks

That'll do just fine Spingebob - though if lifting heavy weights (if not why not?) then I'd increase protein to 1g per lb of lean bodyweight.

Don't forget the two most important "supplements" - water & enough rest!

I don't try and stay in, sometimes I drive when I go out. But lifes for living and a couple of drunken nights a week aren't too bad, are they

I do try and train hard and live healthily through the week to make up for it, doesn't always work ;)

Unless you continue on the diet, or change everything drastically, you will gain the weight back using a protein diet. I know this from experience. I lost 25lbs in 30 days using a protein diet and gained it all back and then some over the next two years. If you are going to try it, drink plenty of water as this will help flush the ketones from your system. Too many ketones result in kidney damage. Ketones are partially burned fat particles. Just be careful with this diet. It gives quick results and should boost your energy, but I would recommend a slow gradual weight loss for lasting results.

It doesn't boost your energy for the first few days, I tried it for a week and came off it because it made me feel so bad. The diet i'm on now is mostly fresh fruit, veg, meat and pasta, and its working great.

Protien Diets aren't really meant for people looking for engery boosts for cardio work.

If your doing a protien Diet then you should be lifting very heavy weights.

Protien helps build back bigger stronger muscles. Otherwise too much protien for your bodies needs will just turn into fat.

A well balanced diet is best for your general athlete. Calories are what count when loosing weight :)

I believe it's a ketogenic diet they're talking about, which includes both fat and protein, with a small amount of carbohydrates, just in case anybody's lost. You may also hear variants of this referred to as the Atkins diet, CKD, and TKD, or Cyclic Ketogenic Diet and Targeted Ketogenic Diet.

The advantage is that when you're not consuming carbohydrates, your body goes into a state of ketosis, and stops using carbohydrates as its primary energy source. This is good for bodybuilders, because it means they can go into caloric deficit without skeletal muscle being burned for energy by way of glyconeogenesis.

Dietary fat and bodyfat become the energy sources; since there's usually plenty of it to go around and it's a more efficient energy storage than carbohydrates, you may find yourself with more energy/endurance once your metabolism switches over, although it'll be a rough few days to week or so before you make the switch.

The cyclic ketogenic diet includes enough carbohydrates on the weekends to take you out of ketosis for a while, to avoid any possible health complications from long-term ketosis, although none are evident yet. The targeted ketogenic diet uses simple, high-glycemic index carbs before and/or after a workout to replenish muscle glycogen stores; since it's immediately absorbed into muscle this doesn't take you out of ketosis, simply prevents muscle wasting.

That is what I was trying to get at. Thanks khafra for clearing that up. I remember getting up at 4:30 am to workout while on that diet and just not getting tired. The diet worked great for rapid weight loss, but I DO NOT recommend it for long term weight loss and fitness, simply because your metabolism goes back to normal once you are done.
