Hey peeps,

Right, my laptop has a TEAC TW-224E DVD/CD-RW combo drive and I've been trying to copy a megadrive emulator and game ROMs onto CD-R, for, erm, back up purposes, you know.......

Anyway, I keep turning my CD-R's (Memorex 52x multispeed 700MB) into shiny new coasters without meaning to. A message pops up telling me it cannot finish copying because the write speed is too high, so it automatically lowers it. So far, I've made coasters at x24, x12 and x8 speed using Window XP's own CD burning software and also using NTI CD Maker 200 Plus.

Dare I try it at x4 speed and risk making more coasters or am I doing something fundamentally wrong?

Direct CD to CD copying is out as I am a lowly paid simian and only have a single optical drive to my name.

:bang: No real reason for this emote, I've just never used it before :D

<sagely advice>a good pirate never tells thousands of people their proffession</sagely advice>:D

sounds like a problem with the disks, or a naff burner software. any chance you can get a decent burning app?

Piracy is wrong. You are a thief. Turn yourself in to the proper authorities. ;)
Or...
A) Get better burner software such as Nero (you're already a pirate, what's one more piece of software?). Alcohol 120% is pretty good and has a 30day free trial
B) Don't skimp on discs. I know you may not have much money but you just can't rely on cheap discs; decent brands are the only way to go. Some brands of discs will give you a coaster regardless of the speed. Memorex have always been rubbish in my experience.
And your justification for this is that burning the emulator and ROMs to disc IS for backup purposes cos they run just fine from the hard drive

They are indeed for, ahem, back up purposes in case my HHD dies on me. It makes sense to make such back ups as I'm sure you'll all agree

Well, maybe if I play around with CD-RW I might have better luck, failing that I'm gonna go ape :bang: (second time I've used this emote :D)

Well I'm sure you used to have these games on cartridge when you were a Megadrive owning young'un. At least until you saw the error of your ways, sold it and all it's games and bought a SNES :D
I've got a load of old SNES, Megadrive and N64 game ROMs stored on my hd. I do have the originals and the consoles but I'm not digging around in the loft for them when I can just play them on the pc

Hey all,

Of course I used to have all those games when I was a kid, all 1,027 of them ;)

Anyway, I managed to back them up onto CD-RW after many, many attempts. Thanks for the help, be here next time as I will no doubt reveal another computery problem that a complete novice could solve.
