Whats with the couple of inches long, black strip near the end of the belt, I've seen on some BJJ coloured belts?

Is it a fashion thing or does it actually denote something?

It's where they put the stripes!

Each belt up to black (white, blue, purple, brown) has up to 4 stripes.
