Hey,

anyone here use linux? I have had linux on and off for the past few years, but never seriously used or learned it. I just recently installed Mandrake 9 and found it to be easier than Windows to install & configure! I've got a 2k install, but no software or drivers are installed and I'm always sitting in linux.

I've got a screenie up at www.geocities.com/bjj_freak/linuxscreenie.png

I've got apache installed & a whole heap of other servers installed, since I have a gateway in front of my box, and I don't see why anyone would wanna hack into my box. Figured I'd play around with PHP and MySQL, but I wouldn't know where to find /htdocs to store my web pages! :D

I'm such a newb to Linux, but once I get my printer working and network shares mounted, I'll be able to do everything I do in Windows.

As nice as it would be, I doubt we'll be able to get rid of Windoze altogether, it will still run some stuff Linux can't.

I'm about as new to Linux as you can get. I'm setting up my Linux box properly this week, I've got Debian to install :) I've used Red Hat mostly till now. I'm going to try and make a Smoothwall firewall when I can too.

Bon, is MySQL and PHP free? If it is, have you got a link to where I can find out more or get it?

Have a look at these for newbie Linux stuff :) http://www.justlinux.com and http://www.linuxnovice.org

Actually, I'm running Mandrake 9 at home right now, but I'm seriously considering getting myself some slack. No services running, to speak of, but I'm considering that too.

I'm still pretty stuck on what version to go for to be honest. I still might get Red Hat

I used to run mandrake but it was too much of a hassle to keep switching from 2k to mandrake. When I go to college I am getting an apple laptop so I can run a Unix distro while still having a nice gui and large software base.

Kyokushin_girl, PHP and MySQL are both free. With Debian, you can do an apt get install, which downloads the packages and installs them for you as you probably know. :D
Mandrake 9 has something similar, which I'm using now to download KDE 3.1 and install.

You can get PHP from www.php.net and MySQL from www.mysql.net .

Thanks for the sites, I'll check them out, I mainly use www.tldp.org

Why switch between O/Ss? I still haven't bothered installing drivers for 2k 'cause I can do everything in linux and I don't play any games.
