I don't think this has been posted here before (or rather it didn't show up in a search). With all the zat was zen, dis is tao talk flying around the boards, I thought folks might like an introduction to the ideas and practices of zen:

I have a few books on Zen myself. It's quite interesting and a very relaxing philosophy.

I doubt many people who post here smoke cigarettes, as they are detrimental to active lifestyles, but when I smoke my breathing is more regulated than any other time of the day, save sleep to which i cannot attest. I have in the past done regular meditation and can say that once you breathe rhythmically and consciously it does a great deal to promote relaxation, which I think is key to good zen. The cigarette unfortunately creates an awareness of itself in one's thought process, because it is burning and must be attended to. I would be interested in a no-maintainence cigarette - light it and forget it.

I would recommend "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind" by Shunryu Suzuki for anyone interested more in zen.
