Sorry about the gratuitously girlie theme, but does anyone have any decent remedies for period pain. Am fed up of spending 3 days out of every 3 weeks doped up on pain killers. Pain today is EXCRUCIATING....... :(

I just noticed that this post in is Traditional Healing.

So, some more information:

Herbal and Dietary Options for Period Pain
http://www.informedhealthonline.org/item.aspx?tabid=9&hottopic=100104&version=full&series=Menstruation%20and%20menstrual%20conditions

Yarrow Tea
If you suffer with menstrual cramps / period pains from PMS, you can drink a cup of Yarrow tea and feel so much better. You can find Yarrow tea just about in any health food store. It tastes great and work well too!

ibuprofen
For cramps assosiated with menstal cycle, take the hightest possible dosage of ibuprofen! recommended by your doctor. Start taking it a day befor your period begins. Then use a heating pad. Thermasilk Heating pads are very GOOD!

Sit in a chair, reach down and with both hands grap your legs about 4 " above your ankles. press with your thumbs, don't press hard, do it gently, hold for about 5 min and breathe out of the bottom of your feet!

I take Tylenol, or any Generic brand of acetominophen. Not too 'traditional', but hey, it works for me.

Thanks for the advice guys much appreciated!
Am now back at home with hot water bottle and lovely cup of tea and pain killers have now kicked in.....*relief* :D
Definately gonna give the yarrow tea a go, apparantly its also good for toothache! The 'take ibuprofen the day before it starts' thing did make me laugh though! Oh, if only my life were that predictable! Also the worst of the pain is over by then anyway....
Apparantly raspberry leaf tea is supposed to work too, although its more useful in the last trimester of pregnancy to relieve labour pains I hear...might be worth a go.....
Thanks again

Ever hear of Noni juice... friends of mine swear by it for relief of cramping.

Noni is a natural tropical fruit found to contain over 150 nutraceuticals and contains high levels of bromelain which is also known as proxeronine (a natural pain reliever). This substance is used to treat severe menstrual cramps. (btw .... also good for all over muscle soreness .... see my article regarding natural pain reliever "bromelain")

Taking about 2 ounces of Noni juice at the onset of cramping has been know to provide relief very quickly ... in less than an hour.

Supplementing calcium (1000 mg) & magnesium (500 mg, twice a day) can help ease painful menstrual cramps.

Parsley helps to ease bloating

Other herbs that can help alleviate symptoms are black cohosh, dong quai, cramp bark & wild yam.

The herb feverfew is effective against headache & migraine.

Lavender has also been used for painful cramps.

As previously suggested you can soothe cramping by placing a hot bottle over the lower back. An alternative to hot bottle is to steam a towel for 5 to 10 minutes then wrap with another towel to retain heat & fold to desired size.

TigerAnsTKDLove is right on in suggesting to exercise through those cramps... exercising daily for at least 30 minutes regulates hormone levels lessening the severity of cramping believe it or not!

Holy smokes, I'm gone for a week, have like 6700 messages to view and THIS is the first one I reply too. Oh I shouldn't complain right? Being a guy and all. I'm thrilled to be back and hope everybody had about a million times better time than I had last week. Sorry for the ramble, hope everyone gives you great responses. One of the docs I work with suggests the hot water bottle/exercise combo.

My wife tried Raspberry Leaf Tea towards the end of her pregnancy with our daughter and we both came to the conclusion that the only thing that it did was increase the shares in the Raspberry Leaf Tea companies.

They actually said that it would help bring on labour if drunk at the end of the pregnancy.

Think about that statement.

Anything at all will bring on labour if done at the end of the pregnancy. That's why it's called the "end of the pregnancy."

Anyway, sorry for the rant. I'd recommend a couple of shots of Jameson's Whiskey and lots of chocolate cake but then what do I know about the subject.

My sympathies and very best wishes.

Cheers,

Matt.

Hey KickChick - my mom has that Noni juice but you have to be careful with giving advise like that. Some people are allergic to it and she said that the juice has made her worse so people should always do some research on possible side effects and get advise from multiple reliable sources before going ahead with something. Not to say your advise was unreliable but just saying that 4 opinions on one subject is better than 1 and that we have to be careful that's all.
