Just thought I'd tell a wee story....

Now my Dad bought one of these... with much ridicule from his son i might add for £10 --cheap no?

As a bit of an in-joke he bought me one for Chrimbo. So since I wasn't doing any training over the holidays I thought

 "what the hell? I'll give it a shot"

I have to say that it did exactely what it said on the Tin. I.e. kept my muscles (well chest, biceps) anyway in good tone without doing any other exercise.

To my complete surprise and many comedy moments the bugger actually worked. After doing about 4 weeks holiday I was happy to report little/ no loss in tone actual increase in some areas!!

However performance?????

Well lets just say my little pre-training training nearly involved me smacking my face on the ground.

Anybody else tried one of these?

Yeah :D

I've had a go with a £10 one too. Great fun, wacked it up to full power on me belly and felt the pain as it work the muscles, lovely :D

Problem was it broke again after a few days. I would like another one though, just for the fun factor at watching your body jump around of it's own accord. I'll get a more expensive one next timne though.

I've thought about getting one, but the idea of wiring your body up to something hooked into the mains just turns me off for some reason.

My one was battery powered ;)

But it's nothing to worry about, it doesn't deliver mains into your body, it all safe DC.

You've probably handled lots of things that are connected to the mains (hair dryer, lamp, electric blanket, etc) and didn't die, so I bet you'll be okay :D

Cheers

Hurt like a bugger when I pulled the thing off in the middle of a pulse.

I got mine from an ad in SKY magazine, though they do the same ones in a shop here for £10.

I'm up training with Dave on the 25/26th at the CEA if you want me to get one for you?

Let the electric pain commense.

(note : beware when you connect it to your bicep at high power as you will try to hit yourself in the face and trying to resist it can result in you ripping your muscle. Put a pillow on your bonce :D )

I refuse to use hair dryers, and electric blankets. As for lamps candles are just fine.

Besides, lets be fair, none of them are designed to pump electricity into your body. Lets hope no one with a pace-maker tries to use them.

I tried one a few years ago, I hated it. It didn't seem to work at all and it hurt :( I might try it again, I have more muscle now then I did then

I sprained my shoulder on monday and the physio has been using one on it to massage it and reduce the swelling.

I think they a are a good idea and might try to get one - situps just don't seem to help my flabby abs

Hi Spongebob, what type is it? As I have seen some which just look like belts, and then some which have 1001 wires and pads coming from it?

This one is a belt, so it's not complex to use.

It just has one big pad that goes around your tum (or whatever else you wrap it around ;) ) and then delivers a small electrical charge into the muscle.

Easy peasy to use.

Oh good, I remember having a go of one, which had about 6 wires hooking up to pads, which all had to be wet before you strapped them to you!! It took you an hour to actually set the damn thing up!!!!

Nah this one is much simpler, though you do still have to lube the big pad for a good conduction. But it only takes about a minute to have it on you and working away.

For those who used it, did you have to put this gel thing on the device?

They're good for rehab and messing about hurting yourself Jackass-style. That's it, they have no real function for anyone healthy and interested in any kind of fitness.

What are they actually designed to do? Tone muscle? lol. Build muscle? lol x 2. Burn fat? Haha.

All I saw from the adverts was someone who looked like they were being jabbed at with a cattleprod. It didn't look comfortable, the idea of sending electrical pulses into my muscles is a huge turn off, and the thought of smacking myself in the head is ridiculous.

They are used a lot in physical therapy and rehab to help people with limited mobility rebuild their muscle tone after injuries. I've had one used on my lower back to try to get the muscle size to even out because of some mild back problems I had when I was younger. It did ok....
The physical therapist I asked about it said that once your muscles are back to normal the things are about useless. If for some reason you're going to be sedentary for 2 or 3 weeks they are better than nothing though.
