I was practising just about 15 mins ago, my teacher had threatened me that if I did not get a perfect stance by the end of the month then he would make me do it in a day :D
Anyways I was doing some horse stance training for about 10 mins n then got to warming up n then stretching and all I could say was WOW! I actually reached a level in spits I could never b'fore n I immedietely checked my active flexibility, and VIOLA! again I was able to hold my kick for about 20 seconds every count which really surprised me since I had beed able to hold only for about 10 secs
Just felt like sharing a great experience with u guys :D

Well done!
Could you share which stretches / stretching exercises you were doing, and how long it's taken you?

Yeah actually I started with some normal warm up and went to stance training, I felt my muscles b'coming more loose so I did some more warm for lower body, I usually do that using light swing kicks ir normal stretches like torso twists, after that I went to doing front splits, that's when I noticed the big difference  in the side splits too  man I was so excited I held that split for about 5 mins. And then finally checked my active flexibility, I held my side kick up as high as I could, I did'nt notice much difference in the height but more in the strength of my muscles being able to hold more time than normal
Man and I thought I would never be able to achive more flexibility

Actually I feel it was because of the stance as a warm up that I was able to hold my kick for a longer time......but puhleeesh don't start an argument on this :(

I know i posted this somewhere else in this forum but, YES! HORSE STANCE IS THE BEST TRAINING!
The other post is called "This is the best leg training" or something like that. it basicaly tells you how to do it.
some people think its bad for your knees but i think its fine if done with correct posture etc

Practising horse stances is an excellent isometric exercise for building leg endurance and making them more energy efficient.
Unlike most exercises where the leg muscles alternatively work and then relax, the horse stance forces the leg muscles, particularly the quadriceps, to constantly explode the entire time the stance is held.
Besides the neutral (forward) horse stance, you can also try these other horse stance exercises too.
Side Horse stance
Sink, pivot on ball of right foot (or left)
Drive off ball, do not raise heel, turning to left (or right)
Front foot does NOT move
Rear foot points 45 degrees to front and back leg is straight
Triangle Horse Stance
Start in horse, turn to bow
Step up with rear leg, then out 45 degrees to horse
Stay low as you move
Turn to bow stance (front leg is leg you just moved)
REPEAT!
4 corner stance exercise
One leg remains planted (some pivoting on ball of foot of course)
Start in horse
Side to side (facing one corner of the "Square")
Step up rear leg and step out to next corner in horse stance
Side to side
Step up rear leg
Congrats on your achievement Cain! :)

kickchick, is horsestance called sitting stance in TKD or is it something totally different?

The drills mentioned by Kickchick also aids in developing an instinct on maintaining your balance standing up. This is useful when you slip on something, and to a degree makes it harder for a grappler to do a takedown on you.

... the same :)
It is commonly known as a "horseback stance" and also as a "straddle-leg stance" or "riding stance."
