I sit here and watch this Muay Thai section and am jealous at all of you who have a school/club which teach muay thai. It's really not fair because all i have in this town are compitition kickboxing, tae kwon do & karate classes.

It seems that very few people here are interested in Muay Thai... i envy all of you! so next time when your knackered in you Muay thai class, think of me and how lucky you are! hopefully it'll motivate you :) hehe

Consider yourself lucky, my town has NO martial arts place. Right now i'm not even studying because i have to drive to the next town for lessons from a friend of my family. But right now I'm not even having classes at all :( oh well.

I have; but the learning is no where near the same as taking leg kicks, head shots & body blows unfortunatly.

Hopefully, they will start a class in your area! If not you can always plan on taking a trip to Bangkok. That might help you get this out of your system. ;)

Yuku:

If you can't find a school near you, either travel afar to learn or find a practice buddy near you who can kick you around. Get a pair of Thai pads and wail away.

If I were you I would start at the kickboxing to learn the punching and various kick techniques. Eventually I am sure a club will pop up as the art is growing really big now.

Yeah, Brackettville is a pretty horrrible place. I advice getting the hell out of there as soon as you can!

Here in Austin we do not have any schools that are specifically for Muay Thai, but we have plenty of schools that offer Muay Thai classes and/or have instructors who are certified to teach Muay Thai if you are interested in learning it.

I'm about to join a school which has an instructor certifed under Chai: http://www.vasquezacademy.com

You said you have kickboxing schools right.... They leg kick the only thing they don't do is use elbows and dance before the fight :P. Thou Muay Thai is the dad of kickboxing its still good to learn kickboxing if you have the chance. taekwondo and kickboxing together make a deadly combo if you stuidly them to the fullest. You can make your own roundhouse one thats powerful. Yeah muay thai is awsome but you should learn kickboxing becuse they use a lot of things muay thai teachs. Hoost from k1 uses kickboxing and leg kicks.... There is no magic in muay thai it all depends on your attuide and your devotetion to it. Don't go off thinking muay thai will teach you but look at it like you will learn from muay thai. Most guys say i want to learn a art but in reality they do it for a little and queit becuse they think its magic.... Any art can help you so you should learn from what you can now.. And someday your dreams will come true and you will enjoy getting kneed to the head and getting your shins busted up.. :p :( my nose hurts....

I currently attend the kickboxing class but its more sport orientated. It's pretty much Tae Kwon Do... fancy kicks with not enough emphasis on the Kick + boxing...

ya i know what you mean but you still can learn stuff.. for example when i first started TKD a while back i beat black belts by the time i was green belt or bule. LOL sad thing is they spin around and there legs don't even reach me :). The thing i love about this world is the internet. Well many peolpe might not agreee with me but i think one of the best ways for a martail artist to gain infromation about MA is the internet. So lets say you joined TKD school near by your house, what you do is you go home and go on the internet and look for a thai roundhouse kick. Then you see clips of it and try it on the heavy bag. Then lets say you go to the next TKD training you use that kick and watch them fly off :D . partice!!!! its really isn't that simple but you still can gain lots of knowlege from the internet. When you have the chance to find a gym or go to thai land you then can learn what you aways wanted. Trust me TKD might have a bad what can i say way of thinking that you can win a fight by strikeing ponits but if you learn the foot work and also good fourms for kicks. If you really want to you can look at the thai kick and the TKD kick and make a kick that works for you. Cro Cop learned TKD and Muay Thai if you look at his kick it snaps it a little at the end. His coach said he has made his own roundhouse. Take my advice and do TKD or kickboxing for a little take out what you need the basics and train at home. If you are smart you take the good out and let them keep the bad. TKD still has somethings that help you, you don't need to do fancy kicks. I got no idea what art you are learning but i would have to say just go to the gyms around you and if you lose to there top guy train there for a while till you beat him then move on. :D thats my style take what i need and get the F*** out!!

I feel lucky too.
In my town (90.000 inhabitants) there are:
- tae kwon do (3 schools)
- karate (3-4 schools)
- Kung fu (2 schools)
- self defense (a lot)
- Judo (1 school)
- Aikido (2 schools)
- Muai Thay (1 school)
- JKD (1 school)

Too bad there aren't JuJitsu schools.

take the kickboxing class, they will teach the punches and kicks (most KB are using the thai roundhouse anyways) and they may even go into clinch / knees depending if they also compet MT rules. the rest u can get from the videos.

There is no MMA or muay thai here either *sigh*.. (1,4 million people) They are zillions of TKD shcools , lots of KB (good and bad) and kung fu , some aikido , ninjitsu , judo , jiujitsu, kendo and generally everything japanese and chineze :D

But It depends what kind of kick boxing school is it around you (from what i see you said it's the karate kicking no boxing type : , if it is forget about it ) ? If they teach KB properly (as boxing with thai kicks) then you can do that and persuade them to teach you knees and elbows too. There is a lot more in (true) MT than that but you'll be ok.

My kB teacher was kind enough to teach me knee and elbow strikes , and altho I don't spar with them i have practice em for years on the hevy bag aside with usual kickboxing and i can surelly say its a lot better than not doing nothing at all. Most MT shcools don't spar with elbows to head so what you'll miss mostly is the knees.

There used to be an old gym with a few MT practitioners, but no full fledged dojo. I used to get some training there, though, so I'm pretty lucky, expecially considering that Muay Thai and Japan aren't exactly synonyms.
