Welcome once again to Candy's dumb newbie question of the week. You are just in time for #4.

This one is REALLY dumb so be warned. How do you grapple with sunburn? We are in the warm months here in Canada and the idiot that I am I weeded one of my flower beds for 4 hours Saturday. I have class Monday night and am red and hurting. Can I tap out because they are on my sunburn?:D

Worst part is, I was wearing a halter top so my entire back was exposed. There are NO comfortable positions if I have someone in my guard. Any suggestions for pain relief?

I told you this one was DUMB!!!!!

SPF70 or stay out of the sun ...

Bathe in Lidocaine before training.... or don't grapple until burn is gone.

...simple as that.

If your class is anything like mine, don't mention it to the instructor. They'll go out of their way to slap you on the back or bear hug you just for a bit of fun ;)

I know, stupid to get burnt in the first place! I didn't realise how long I had been out there. I lose track of time when I am in my gardens.:o

Lidocaine, eh? I won't not grapple so medicate me baby!;)

My dumb question is what happened to Dumb Question #2.

Have you tried Vaseline??

I agree with Aegis don't tell anyone or you'll suffer :(

I feel your pain Mrs Owt. On Saturday I got the worst sunburn I've ever had laying out on my boat, with no sunscreen. I'll never forget to put that on again.

I wish there was a miracle cure because my back and legs kill! Good luck grappling if you do!

My dumb question #2 was included in the first thread but kind of got ignored so I now start individual threads. That help?:)

Aftersun's pretty handy, especially if you do no-gi training. It'll make you good and slippery.
I'm with the others about not telling anyone; I had a sunburned back on Wednesday, told one of the guys I train with, who told my renshi and he went out of his way to demo anything and everything that required a back breakfall on me! "Anyone want to see that one again?" was the quote of the night

Ouch!!! - you have my sympathy.

One alternative would be to 'forget' which class you are in, and when they come in to grapple with you take them down with flying kick (landing on your feet, or them - whichever you prefer). :D

Hmmm...a thought, but it might get me killed! I am the smallest member of my BJJ class by about 7 inches and 45 pounds. I could kick one of them once - and then...well I don't want to think about what would happen!;)

KC's the boss, get some of that lidocaine spray. Might make it bearable.

OK - Point taken. Part of the sympathy comes from my Tang Soo Do teacher taking the whole class to a local BJJ session run by his friend. In two hours I quickly learned that it is a very good idea not to go to ground (although we now know a couple of things to do if it does happen).

Just an update for all of you kind enough to reply. I went to class, did try a medicated cream which did nothing but make me smell funny. I swear somehow Stuart, the guy leading warm-ups, knew I had a sunburnt back ( I am going to have to interrogate my hubby to see if he let the cat out of the bag in the change room!:woo: )and he made sure we did the oddest, most painful warm-ups ever. First the crunches - YIKES:cry: - rubbing up and down, hundreds of times on the most sunburnt part of my back. Then these weird things where you roll back from a sitting position, kick your legs up lifting your hips up and just having your shoulders remaining on the ground, then you roll back again and kick your legs out in front of you when you are on your butt again. OUCH!!! Then the piece de resistance! Rolling itself. Rod figured we needed to work on how to pace ourselves so instead of working a drill we just rolled, switching partners every couple of minutes for over half an hour. Just rolled, and rolled, and rolled - most of the time me trying to keep everyone in my guard - guess what? That is ON YOUR BACK!!!!!!!!!:woo:

I am going to cry now.

ouch! had i seen this thread sooner i would've told you not to roll. unfortunately you did. i feel your pain. really, it happened to me two years ago. rolled right after i came from the beach.

but if i were your instructor, i would've done exactly the same thing. :D

I feel your pain Candy. I have very pale skin and get badly burnt at least once every summer. I try very hard to take care of my skin, but if I let my guard down just once... Put lots more aftersun on, and I hopefully by next lesson it will be bearable.
