I'm sure most of you recall the worm that was being spread via website servers and IE. Finally microsoft put out a patch for IE a few days ago to 'prevent' it.

Check out windows update site, there should be a small patch available for download.

I don't use IE except for when I update windows but I never know when someone else might use my pc and run IE as the default browser, so I went ahead and installed the patch. Watch the patch itself become more trouble. :/

There's a program called IEradicate that will safely remove all traces of IE from your PC, and still leave it in one piece :)

Nice find Kgirl.

It works with: Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium and Windows 2000(sr1).

Not with:Windows 2000sr2 or Windows XP

I need something for my XP at the moment. :(

I'll look on the server at work Johnny... I think it works with Win2k, because thats what we use.

I came across that tool or a similar tool some time ago, probably more than a year since I don't recall the exact name of it. But I never tried to use it cause I had issuses getting other browsers such as mozilla to use windows update site correctly. I want to still be able to update my o/s.

There is a way to download Windows Updates without using IE. How exactly you do that, I'm not sure. If anyone knows, PLEASE post it! :D

It might be the "Automatic Updates" setting.

Keeping Windows up-to-date automatically

Windows can now keep your computer up-to-date automatically with the latest updates and enhancements. You no longer have to search for critical updates and information; Windows delivers them directly to your computer. Windows recognizes when you are online and uses your Internet connection to search for downloads from the Windows Update Web site. An icon appears in the notification area each time new updates are available.

or if not that, then Software Update Services.
Briefly, this is where you set up a Server on your network to Automagically get the Updates from Micro$oft. This Server then automagically pushes the Updates to PCs on your internal network.

Cheers.

Austomatic update only works for critical updates though, doesn't it?

It tells you that

You need to be running a version of Internet Explorer 5 or higher in order to use Windows Update. :(

EDIT: I was wrong, I just had to read the whole thing. It gives you a link to the Microsoft Download Centre if you are using something other than IE, that must be the way :)

Can I claim all credit now?

Don't ask, claim!

I plan on giving the suggests a try. I've been reading more about this certain IE exploit and seems the patch was a cheap easy fix. I predicted it! Seems that the IE browser is so insecure (No surprise!) that Microsoft is brainstorming about rebuilding IE from scratch.

Another IE security update for July 30th.

Also besides IE, my o/s had an update too so might want to check for updates even if you don't use IE.
