View Full Version : A brain teaser

This is a brain teaser that so far noone has gotten without me telling them first. If you've heard it before, please don't ruin it for everyone else and give the answer.
Joe wants to get into a very exclusive club. The problem is, it's a members-only club, and he's not a member. There is a code that members are given that allows them entrance to the club. The way to get in is to first walk up to the bouncer who guards the entrance. He will then say something to the member, and then he/she will say something back. If what he/she says is right, then the bouncer will let them in, and if not, he'll throw them out. So Joe waits in the bushes beside the entrance and listens to the bouncer and the members, to see if he can crack the code.
Member 1
Bouncer: 12
Member: 6
The member is let in.
Member 2
Bouncer: 6
Member: 3
The member is let in.
Joe now thinks he has enough info to crack the code and get inside.
Joe
Bouncer: 10
Joe: 5
Joe is now kicked out of the club. What should he have said, and why? (Basically, whats the code?)

Let me in or I'll break your legs :p

Theres not much to go on to work that out, the others have just halfed the number, so whats Joe supposed to do??

Or is the answer 6 or 7?

Come on, if you just kept throwing numbers at me, and I told you when you got it right, then half of the puzzle would be taken out of this. Just tell me why you think it's either 6 or 7 pgm, THEN I'll tell you how close you are.
I know what the code was. No trainers, No denim. Why else would he get kicked out :)

Member 1, bouncer said 12, which begins with T, member said 6 which begins with S.
Member 2, bouncer said 6, which begins with S, member said 3 which begins with T.
Joe, bouncer said 10, which begins with T, Jo said 5 which begins with F. so I thought maybe he should have said a number which begins with S? So would 6 do?

Is the answer 9?

Sorry, I meant 8.
Member 1
Bouncer: 12 (1+2=3)
Member: 6 (6+3=9)
Member 2
Bouncer: 6
Member: 3 (3+6=9)
Joe
Bouncer 10 (1+0=1)
Joe: 8 (8+1=9)
So, adding up the numbers in the string equals 9.
That's my answer and I'm sticking with it!

Sorry Kurohana, thats not it either.
I see you guys are going the complete wrong direction, so I'll give a hint. You don't need to use any kind of math (adding, subtracting, etc...)
ROBERT

He can not get in until he becomes a member.

He should hv said 'hey dude I wanna apply for a membership so lemme in'
Since to get a number applied to him he has to enter the bar somehow

Alright, looks like this thread's died, so I'll give you the answer.
He should have said 3. Twelve has six letters in it. Six has three letters in it. Ten has... you get it already.

surely counting letters is in some way related to adding?

Sorry, thats the best way I could tell the hint. If I said complicated math, youd think I meant pythagorean theorem or something (its happened before) so I just use that one.
Don't feel bad though, only one person has ever gotten that, and it was with the hint.

Argh, only noticed this thread now (too much work , honest!), and got it within a minute. Nobody's going to believe me though are they? Oh the unfairness of life...
