Apologies to those denied their MAP fix over the last few hours.

Current thinking is that the site has been deliberately hacked!

http://isc.sans.org/diary.php . Basically there appears to be a recently found IE exploit which allows code to be dowloaded and executed without the user being aware, the nasty bit is that someone has been hacking websites so that they insert some javascript at the end of the normal web page which will exploit the IE vulnerability. Apparently some search engines and shopping sites were affected...

I trust "Da Management" have thought of contacting "E-Budo.Com" people about this. That site is STILL off the air following a hacker attack (is it a month yet?). Of course, they had the added complication of the site owner being out of the country and unable to get to the server to do things (he was working on a security contract in Iraq, personal protection, etc.).

If a happy hacker is dumb enough to do one MA website, he may be dumb enough to do two. There are a few others that should be watching their backdoors about now.

In passing... , I was rather unsettled to be invited to check out a discussion forum recently that had just been set up by a 15-year old, where the topic areas were Knife-Fighting, Home-Made Explosives, Sparring and ... Hacking!

I can live without enemies like that right now... so I have not returned, even to try and persuade them how reckless and wrecking their foolishness can be.

On June 14th, at about 8pm (EST) something on our server caused CPU load to climb through the roof. Normally running between .8 and 1.1 it was in the 700 range when our datacenter managed to fight their way in and reboot it. We weren't able to isolate the cause.

This could be someone stupidly targeting martial arts sites, or an issue with vb. When y'all find out more I'd be interested.

Good luck and congrats on getting MAP back up fast.

sounds pretty similar to what we experienced. Ours certainly broke 200-300 CPU usage instead of the usual 1-2ish.

Hi Everyone,

I don't believe e-budo was hacked. What happened was the domain name went into a redemption period. I paid the fees, but I could not get into Network Solutions unless I had the passwords. John Lindsey was in Iraq and his username and passwords were in Houston. I then had to get his drivers license and a copy of his utility bill, because the address that Network Solutions had was an old one. I faxed all the information and was able to change the passwords. That was on Thursday. E-Budo is now back up. If I can help in any way, please let me know. I know how it feels not being able to log on to a favorite forum :)

Been there and done that already Johhny. It definitely looks like a deliberate hack, and possibly one that has affected other sites.

We are currently working on tracing back some of the IP addresses used, and also talking to other sites that have been affected by this so we can pool our information.

Once we have the name and address of those responsible, I'll just post their details here. I'm sure there are plenty of MAP members keen to pay them a friendly visit! ;)

it's an interesting one - VB.com seem to think it only affects older forums (version 2), but some of the sites that have been down recently (including ourselves) are version 3 as well. However, MAP did not lose any posts, but were instead hit with a DOS (Denial of Service) attack, so there may be several form of attack going on at the moment.

vbulletin 3.02 should be due out this week, so I'm going to look at installing this as a priority in case it has patches for any potential security issues. I might even sneak some other minor upgrades into this process.
