I think that it could mean to be yourself, you shouldn't try to be someone else, because you are not! you should adapt to yourself, control your own future.

I think it means if you go around adapting to others you'll lose yourself. Your heart. Your future. Your life. And *gasp* the girlfriend you haven't even met yet.
Good advice. I think you can adapt sometimes though. Just know who you are.

Some people go around specifically adapting to people they perceive as higher upon any given heirarchy than they. It is unethical. From the receiving end it is very twisted. It is a shame our individual social environments cannot always be natural (ie. synonymous) ones.
