I'll give you a clue, look where the grid intersects the slope.

is that why the right hand edge of the grid seems like it leans to the right?

the triangle pieces have different angles

Yes its all in the gradient, the gradient on the big triangle is less than the little triangle, My head hurts!

So on the second diagram, the larger triangle starts off with the lower gradient giving the triangle the larger overall size. On the first diagram the overall being 1 square less. :)
