View Full Version : Anyone play games other than martial arts games?

I play First Person Shooters. The kind like quake or doom or unreal.
I found that the hand/eye coordination improved by doing martial arts and playing these types of games. Aiming is much harder than you think.
If you play on the internet against other players, martial arts will also help you. I became much better at anticipating the other guys and what they are going to do.
The experience goes both ways. After playing the FPS games, my eye sight seems to be better. I see things that I would have ignored before. Like if I go to a party, I can see a fight coming about 10 minutes before the punches start. I am much better at assessing threats. For some reason, playing games in which people hunt you down and kill you gives you an insight into how they think.
That insight works in the real world. I think I see the same behavior in the real world that I do in the guys in the game. Maybe they look sneaky, maybe they look aggressive. There is something about them that I learned from competing against aggressive people in the online video game.
My favorite game is called Serious Sam. It is great as a trainer for learning how to play FPS well. It is an old game, been out for 3 years or so now. I think you can buy it for $10 at the bargain bin.

Well, I have not noticed anything really improved in my life through video games, but I like to play, old school platforming, FPS, and Action/Adventrure. I esp like the Adventure ones that can challege your mind. Like Zelda.

i prefer to play rpg like zelda and final fantasy and things like res. evil etc . i'm useless as fighting games!! but that doesn't stop my boyfriend from trying to teach me.. i can pull of moves with evil ryu but no in a fight hehe :D
i do find that it affects my life but not in a good way. i play tony hawks skate board games alot and now i'm under the impression that i'm as good a skater IRL as i am on the game... couldn't be further from the truth!! :D

it is a fact that First Person Shooters increases your real life reflex and hand/eye coordination :D
i played Quake, Doom, and i used to be a pro in CS, my team won the regional tournament in uni
i also played a lot of RPG and strategy games, like Diablo, Stacraft, Warcraft, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy etc, had a pretty good rank on the battlenet :D
hehe talk about martial arts games, well i'm not going to say i'm an expert, but you get the idea :D, all versions of street fighters, KOF, Tekken, you name it, i'v mastered it :)
but those were a long time ago, i haven't touched any games for god knows how long :)

manofleisure, you're funny. PS3 is only suppose to cost $300 when it comes out around 2006. I know it is suppose to have a hard drive, better graphics, backward compatible, hm, not sure what else. Heard it is suppose to look kinda like the first Playstation. Don't know if that is true though.
Xbox is great, and it is even better when you like the games on the system. Joking, kind of :D
I mostly play my Xbox but once in a while play the PS2. Love the adventure/action games. Grand Theft Auto Double Pack, Ninja Gaiden, Halo, Serious Sam, Knights of the Old Republic, Tenchu: ___________ from Darkness, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, Resident Evil games, Rygar, Legacy of Kain games, Blood Omen games, Manhunt, etc. Plus fighting games like Shenmue/2, Soul Calibur/2, Dead or Alive 2/3, Ninja Turtles, Street Fighter games, King of Fighter games, Fatal Fury games, etc.
So, yeah, I like a lot of games that aren't fighting. Fighting games with story modes are a great add on. Or adventure/fighting games.

Another vote for 1st person shooters on the PS2. Red Faction / Timesplitters / etc - but I do branch out into a bit of snowboarding and puzzle solving from time to time.
I've been playing video games the majority of my 40+ years (grew up in seaside resort), and find a vast improvement in using lifelike equipment. The gamepad is OK, but I drive better with a wheel in my hand and shoot better with a gun. For a real buzz, I recomment the arcade version of Police 24-7 where you have to physically move your body to hide behind walls etc. :woo:

Xbox and PC player.. Why not the other consoles? Because I want to game online. (and face it, Sony and Nintendo's online service is nothing.). Xbox Live _O_
Anyway, I play rpg's, strategy (Starcraft Broodwar) and all kinds of stuff that comes in my way :)

I like all kinds of word games, and simulation games. PC only, though, I don't have any game consoles. And I'd love to have a Windows-compatible version of Duke Nukem!

I used to be a Diablo 2 nut. Now I just rent random stuff. I just returned Return of the King (very good, but rather difficult), and I'm looking to try a good stealth-action game. I already played Splinter Cell 2 and was really impressed, but I'd like to try the Xbox version of Tenchu next. I like survival horror games too, but there aren't enough good ones out there I've heard of.

I play the dancey dancey game where you use your feet! :D It's addictive, and good training.
I'm also addicted to RPG's and a few shooters, most notably Doom 2. My rocket-sniping technique will never fail! Muahaha!

I play all sorts of games! I'm a Nintendo man at heart, and I'm thinking of blowing a good chunk of my paycheque on a Gamecube and some games. I'm living behind the times...my latest system is my N64, and I've played most of my games to death.
RPGs are probably my favourite type of game, and I have a soft spot for FPS games as well. Goldeneye, anyone?

I like Quake, but unfortunately I can't deal with the 3d motion. I get dizzy and want to throw up. Sad, I know. Anyhow, love hack and slash RPG's (Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Diablo, Champions of Norrath, etc), action hack and slash (Onimusha Series, Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry), and light gun games. I'm fanatical with the lightguns, have 2 ps2 ones, 1 ps1, and 4 xbox ones (3 different light guns, one shotgun/scope gun).
When I was younger, I use to love survival horror games (11th Guest, Phantasmagoria, etc). Now I just like to slash and shoot things. :woo:
I hardly play games anymore, but at one time.. when i didnt have much else todo i would play quake2 for hours and hours and hours online and get pretty damn good. played for most top clans ending up in the top euro clan till when the game died online....ahh the good old days :D
now i just dabble in some capturestrike q3 and a bit of ut2k4 :)

Go right on ahead, though. PS3 won't be out till like 2006. =/
I play FPSs, RTSs, RPGs, adventure now and then, but not too much. :)

I just found a rather addictive little game: Ragnarok Online. It's an MMORPG that's actually fun. There's all sorts of anime-style effects and it's got 2d chibi characters set in a 3d world with a rotating camera. It can be really really hard, too.

I go in spurts... and will play most anything as long as a good plot exists. I like to be made to think I guess, Shooters like Spliter Cell that involve more then just shooting. RTS type games... God games... RPG's (Neverwinter Nights and Morrowind being my favs right now).
My fiancee gets upset at times because I'll chose a game over TV. She is definatly more the TV type. When I'm in the mood its all good but I prefer something a little more interactive and so tend to turn to games.

SWIFT, did you buy the enormous joystick for Steel Battalion? When it came out for PC, I heard it costed $350 or something, but that $320 of that was for a 3-foot long joystick with something like 50 buttons on it. The last $30 was for the actual game :D
Now that Fatal Frame's out for Xbox, that's my next investment. After Silent Hill 2, I feel a need to be scared out of my wits, and not be bored out of my mind by a ten-minute soliloquy at the end.

I play all types of games too... Dance dance revolution, Para para paradise, Percussion freaks...though my other favourites are fighting ones like Naruto, Dead or Alive, Guilty Gear X and so on... XD I like almost any game thats not sports. shooting ones arent fun either unless someone plays it with you. I love ninja gaiden and tenchu too. <3

I play tons of different games, always have. I was playing my brother at perfect dark on the n64 lastnight :D Best multiplayer game ever. I swear if they made the same game on the 64 with different individual missions but the same combat simulator, I would get it in a flash. I play loads of other games like need for speed underground, pro evo 2, mortal kombat deadly alliance, this is fight night 2004, quite a few FPS and RPGs especially zelda series. I even got addicted to pokemon on the gameboy when i was on holiday! I felt bad about mocking pokemon nerds all these years. Basically, if a game is supposed to be great in it's genre, I will play it.

I play anything decent, dont care whether its a martial arts game, action game, driving game or RPG. I am not a big fan of sporting titles such as ESPN football etc.
Amongst my favorites would have to be Morrowind, Rallysport Challenge2, Ninja Gaiden, GTA3 + Vice City, Soul Calibur2, Ghost Recon, Mech Assault, Metal Gear Solid, Baldur's Gate. Trouble is gaming is so time consuming that I dont play so much these days with my regular job, training and evening working the doors.

I actully didn't buy Steel Batallion. My best freinds brother bought the game, played it for 12-hours streight the same day, hasn't touched it since. As soon as we beat Castlvania:SotN, then we're gona really start a poundin on SB.
But the stuff adout the controler the size of mississppi, ya, thats real. And it has closer to 43 buttons......i think. 2-joysticks, 40-sumtin buttons, and three pedals. This game is definitly worth $350. The omuniss aura of raw power that emits from the consle is already worth $100 of it. :woo:
Oh ya, I think its only $350 if you buy the meatlr controls, most others are about $140.

i've played fps, 3rd person, simulators(space fighters, building, people), strategy, rpg, sports(tennis on arcade and basketball), conversacional(i think they're text adventures or something in english, monkey island-type games), tactical strategy, etc.
some of the great jewels of the gaming world i've experienced:
syndicate wars(old tactical game)
homeworld(GO!GO!GO!GO!GO! homeworld!, space strategy)
mech commander, mechwarrior(big robots, first one is strategy, others are fps)
metal fatigue(strategy, big robots, best game i ever played that wasn't fighting)
sim tower(old building sim, very good)
rising lands(good old strategy game, VERY hard, only got to 6th level or so, of about 14 i would guess)
darkstone(rpg, good)
planescape torment(REALLY good rpg)
tanktics(funny but hard strategy game, very good)

FPS all the way for me. Played all of the Bioware RPG's (Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale) plus Planescape: Torment but got really bored. eg: You need to deliver this scroll to some inconsequential character so you can unlock more annoying side missions before you can progress. Give me action, not stupid fedex missions...
Anyway, the best online experience i've had is UT2K4, Onslaught mode. Very real strategy element, and when you've got a good team and are communicating it really makes a difference. UT2K4 death match is the most intense action i've ever experienced, especially when people break out the dodge moves, wall, shield and lift jumps, adrenalin combos etc. Against really good players, you've got no chance. Aside from that, RTCW:Enemy Terrirtory is pretty good, so is Call of Duty and Medal of Honour. There was a real glut of WWII games for a while, thank god that's almost over, now the publishers are pushing Vietnam simulations, which is far more tasteful ;). I love the sci-fi FPS with rediculous weapons, like Unreal Tournament, Tribes, and Quake. Doom3 was a *real* letdown though, so haven't played it since the first completion - did anybody else find it was crapper than expected? Lucky I didn't buy it, would have felt ripped off. :D I know i've left CS out of all this, but only because it's a bit old and, well, boring. CS:Source only prettied up the engine, not the gameplay. So not much to say about it.
As for fighting, i'll only play Mortal Kombat, *any* Street Fighter if I can play Akuma, Dead or Alive and Soul Edge/Blade/Calibur.
Yeah, i'm a game whore. It's official.

try diablo, by blizzard entertainment, or neverwinter nights, i think you probably won't find another rpg with more hack & slash than diablo, and i left neverwinter nights just because the hack & slash got too repetitive for my taste(i'm completely intolerant of hack & slash in games with developed questing plots, and AD&D is too complex to represent in a game), and interfered with the quests, so i think you'll like them just fine

FPS all the way. Pretty much only play DoD (Day of Defeat) WWII Mod for Counterstrike. Clan leader in <SaF> Clan and we run our own 22 man server. Can be found through steam. Server can be switched to UT / Doom etc if anyone ever wants to play.

my big addiction is counter strike, played it since it came out (I mean from the first betas, not when it was released for sale). recently started playing CS:source which is pretty much the same game with better graphics.
I dont really have a favourite genre. I loathe most RTS games but I loved starcraft, and I dont like most RPG's but I played diablo and diablo 2 for years (if you can class it as an rpg)
also play hitman series, excellent games, dont think they fit any genre really. and ttal war, which is a sort of semi rts/turn based strategy game (but so infinitely better than age of empires etc that its not funny)
