I have been doing various studies on martial arts for about 8 years now, mainly reading but have also practised Wing Chun, Lau Gar, Karate, and Aikido recently and am really interested in bruce lee's philosophy and art form of Jeet Kune Do.
My understanding of this so far is that it is not a martial art nor a art form but a form of self expression, to absorb what is useful and discard what is not - to my understanding I think he means that everybody is different, some people are naturally strong, some quick, flexable etc etc. so it would be logical to work on areas of particular martial arts which compliment your various physical abilities.
So with this in mind I cant see how various clubs can can claim to teach Jeet kune do, I surpose one can point one in the particular right direction but dont think it can be taught as such as it requires self knowledge and this can only be learned by yourself, I hope people can see where I'm coming from here and dont take offence as this was not my intention at all.
My understanding of most martial arts so far is - and remember please dont take offence... nearly every martial arts roots stems down to one master, like Aikido for example was the great Morihei Ueshiba - There is no doubt that he was an incredible fighter and phylosopher but did he aquire this ability through self knowledge and expression and understanding which ultimately turned in the very effective martial art Aikido.
I surpose the ultimate question is do you think Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do would have turned into an actual martial art form eventually if he didn't meet his unfortunate early demise, and when one becomes a master do they become a master of a martial art or a master of themselves, I hope you can see where I'm coming from.
