What kind of instrument do you play? I'm talking about one that you play all the time and have excelled at. I don't mean one that you can play just because you know how to make sound. Also, can you read the music for it?

I play sax, flute, and clarinet. I have some reasonable piano and guitar ability as well. Right now I'm more into sitting down at my desk and writing songs than actually playing them, though.

I play, actually played, trumpet and baritone for many years, but its been a long time since I've played. My lip has gotten so weak that the last time I tried to play I could barely produce a proper note. :( My enduring favorite songs to preform are Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy and Rollo Takes A Walk.

How long have you been playing the violin? I've played for about a year and a half. 500 dollars per wedding isn't a bad deal, eh? I used to play bass guitar until it fell apart. The okirena sounds pretty cool, kind of an Irish sound

Yes, the vocals, or singing, is an instrument.

Guitar here. Can't read music and got a tin ear. Been playing for about 20 years give or take. Made a demo (laying around the house somewhere) and a video. Me and a friend on acoustic, playing stuff we wrote and a few covers we mutilated. He's the one who can sing, I sound like a crow choking on a piece of barb wire.

When I get a couple more years of experience, I'm going to play the violin at a school tallent show or Mr. GC. I could care less to win, I just want to be noticed for a rare tallent. Only one other kid in our 1000 population school plays the violin, but I have seen him for about 13 months now, so I guess he moved. Good kid, didn't get expelled, but I heard he was real good.

I'm protective about my violin. I don't like when people touch it, so never woudl I take it to the military unless I had a spare.

Cadets? Like...under the age of 18? I'm in that, too. I'm in the USNSC Indianapolis. Where are you located at? One more question, did you go to flagship May 15-16 in Great Lakes, Chicago?

Digital? Isn't that the same thing as techno? One thing I like, I don't know if it can be classified as an instrument, but some people can make themselves sound like a synthesizer. The do it for their friends with everyone's break dancin' on the streets. Some of them are pretty good.

Trombone. Just passed my grade 5.. with distinction :) not that great for a yr 11 though.

I'd be a lot more pleased with myself if my girlfriend wasn't so talented (grade 8 clarinet, working on grade 7 piano and just taken her grade 5 tenor sax.. which she only got for christmas!) and kept referring to herself as "... *very poor*" [moderated :) ] because she only compares herself to those better than her, and is mates with one of the best young clarinet players in the country!

My grade was only trinity though- i'll sit Associated Board for 6-8 as they're worth UCAS points when I apply for Uni, and as I want to go to oxbridge I'll need as much going for me as i can get!

Classical guitar here. I used to do rock, folk and jazz but gradually just fell in love with all the old music that was available.

I believe that someone (I can't remember who) once said something about life not being all bad if you could buy a book of Beethoven sonatas for $10 and play them for the rest of your life.

Cheers,

Matt.

i'm learning how to play guitar, more specifically i'm learning chords at the moment. i'm on the first lesson book , i love guitar, especially acoustics though i haven't in the past couple of days:( because i need a music stand, as of lately i've used this box to put the book on, but since i'm learning chords right now, the box is so low to the ground that it gets kinda of hard to distinguish the notes in the chords. its amazing, there are about 20 notes within the first three frets alone.

i love that whiny sound that your fingers make when they switch to different/and go up and down strings.

i'm also learning how to play paino which i also love.

i want to learn how to play drums as well.

i got a harmonica, it cost like five dollars though, lol, it would be cool to learn for real.

I've been playing the piano since I was two and a half years old, but for some reason, my sightreading is still cr*p. I think I'm piano dyslexic.

Oh, and I sing, too (or used to). I always thought it was funny how singers think they're sight reading, when they only have to read one note at a time, with very little space between notes, and usually a rather slow rhythm (no malice intended, seriously, I love singers - but as a pianist, I'm not supposed to :) )

Oh, in addition, I bought a fairly cheep guitar a while back, and tought myself a few chords, but I by no stretch of the imagination "play the guitar".

I really doubt that last message (EarthElement) was in reference to me, but regardless, I want to point out, for the record, I'm a very, very good piano player - as I've been doing it since I was two and a half, although, as I said before my sightreading is really bad, at least, for the level I play at.

I'm also a very good singer, but I'm a better piano player. I have had people I don't know walk up to me after recitals to shake my hand, though.

As for guitar - no. Like I said before, I don't even pretend to play, although I know a few chords.

EarthElement

Don't worry, it wasn't. But I'm just stating that I believe,(as do many others) that practicing 1 instrument at a time is a better idea than practicing even 2. If your really good at that 1, then i dont see the harm in taking up a new 1, however it just makes sense to do 1, and devote all your time into that so you can be good at it. Or devote it to 2, and be average at both instruments. :p

Umm...thanks. I think.

I think that it is possible to learn more than one instrument at once, though it depends on the combination of instruments, and how you apply yourself. It's very difficult, say, to study trumpet and saxophone both at the beginner level. However, if you were to try to pick up sax and clarinet at the same time, it would be much MUCH easier. In fact, many people I know started out just that way: with two similar instruments.

Ya but I'd perfer to do 1 instrument and focus on it. Although you could do 2,(compatable or not) you still must put effort into learning both. So i guess ill take the lazy way and go mono.

I have an old nylonstring acoustic from a brand called Framus, I gave her the name Franzesca (you have to give your instrument or weapon a name to give live to them). Hi Guys I play the Guitar Lead n Rythem n Bass, I have been playing since I was 8 years ols I mean I began to have an interest and played around with me dads guitar, and slowly got the hang of it.

I can sight read music but prefer that age old system of tab invented by the old Lute players.

My favorite music to play is the Blues n Rock. However I play Jazz, and classical music, When playing as a solist I like to play 'Early Music'.

I have been a session player and love working in the studio.

Although Gigging is fun when actually on stage playing I hate all the touring, and moving me gear in and out of venues, with small doors, and loads of stairs. Great when you got roadies though.

Hey av you noticed that in most pub venues the stage is next to the loo or was that just me a bit over the top one night ???? :D

I play guitar. I have an Ibanez RG570 with DiMarzio Evolutions (they're getting replaced soon, I'm bored with the way they sound) and a Gibson Gothic Series Explorer (original run). I've just got a shiny new Line 6 Flextone III XL212 combo for them too (my neighbours want me dead) and I'm looking at maybe getting a Hamer Archtop in the next couple of months
I've been playing for about ten years, have played in a few bands and am currently involved in a very embryonic noise/ ambient/ metal kinda project at the moment (think Neurosis meets Cult of Luna with a touch of Soundgarden)

shakuhachi or shinobui? I have been learning (struggling) with the shak for a while now. Are you learning formally or on your own?

A friend of mine gave me a shakuhachi a few years ago, and I really fell in love with it. I mostly practice by myself, though I'd really like to find a teacher.
I know how it feels, it's not as easy as it seems. The shak is so simple it is complicated. :) Are you learning by yourself or formally? How long have you been learning?

Hi Peacemaker,

I am lucky enough to have a Japanese master player living in my city, and have been getting lessons for about four and a half years. Still very much the begginer though, he regularly tells me that things will make sense "in eight years or so.." But I love it, and my teacher has just brought me back a beautiful new flute from Japan, so I am going through new instrument infatuation as we speak.

You should be able to find a teacher near where you are, there are quite a few in the US from what I understand. Hop over to www.shakuhachi.com, and have a look in the teacher, or subscribe to one of the forums there and ask about. People are usually very freindly and supportive of others with this sort of weird musical habit.

And apparently, back in the old days shakuhachi were even good for giving people a good whacking with, I do like a musical instrument that can be used for violent counterpoint.

I have a guitar which I can play a few cords on, I'm not very good but I intend to learn lol.
I'm better with a drum though but I don't tell many folk about this area as I used to play quite a few instruments while I was at school but it's a long time ago. I was even in a church choir once but I'm sure I can reach the highest notes again and I do have a practice session every so often when I visit the Blue John mines near where I live lol. They do encourage people to sing there if you have been in a church choir lol.

I've been playing the Sax now for about 13 years. I haven't played much in the last few years. I'm trying to remedy that now. I gotta say, my fingers are surprisingly good at remembering what to do after these last few years, but the endurance in the lips is gone! That's going to take a while to build back up.

i chose other, becuase i fit into most of those categories!

started bass guitar at age six (had a small size one specially made)
did a bit of trombone in primary school, and restarted again in sixth form
flugelhorn from necessisty (knew trumpet fingering and band didn;t have one)
saxophone performer's certificate (just above grade 8 but no scales)
bass clarinet (ditto- still remember turning up to the exam with it and the adjudicator thought i was joking- asked me to go get my proper clarinet)
strings-did some double bass in high school to compliment bass guitar-grade 5 level also bouzouki, mandolin and some electric violin
flute- we had one lying around i just picked up. Not bad, but not good either.
and singing.

Cool, yes ,it's a really lovely instrument. It annoyed me when I gave it up due to an awful A Level music teacher! Originally wanted to take it up professionally, but had to play 2nd instrument so chose the clarinet, but it was awful , I just kept sounding like I was slaughtering a swan!

Hmmm, I thought I had responded to this thread. :o

Anywho...

I play 6-string bass guitar, and fretless bass guitar. It was my profession for a number of years. I have a degree in Jazz Performance, so in answer to the OP, I can read music quite well. Mini CV follows: I've played in clubs, on the road (from the Yukon to New Mexico), on cruise ships, TV, major festivals, and a fair amount of studio work, including one full-length CD, and a third of another, give or take. I also play a bit of flute (that's what I started on), and I used to dabble in classical guitar and string bass. Man, I gotta start gigging again. :)

Best regards,

-Mark

Played classical guitar for a few years but stopped a couple of years back when my guitar teacher moved away :(

Bleh. I hate that. My harp teacher moved back to Ireland after her boyfriend dumped her. No one else in the area that I like. *sigh*

When I was 6 my parents made me learn piano. I was forced to learn it for about 10 years. Never really enjoyed it. 5 years ago I started playing guitar...I love it. But now I'm starting to appreciated the piano a little more too.

It's funny how useful it turns out to be.

Just picked the bass up for the first time in a couple of years out of boredom so I'm back at learning Smoke on the Water. How long until I attempt The Clansman again? :)

EDIT: Hmmm, roughly 45 minutes after picking up the bass I'm remembering Toxicity (SYOD) and The Clansman (Iron Maiden)

Praise be! Someone who will understand the humor when I use tune titles from the traditional repertoire.

By the by,your catagory isn't "other"-pipes of all stripes are woodwinds.

I've played most of the band/orchestra instruments at one time, I started on Alto Sax, then Baritone Sax, then Bassoon while playing Bass Guitar/Piano in Jazz Band. I played Sousaphone and Tuba in Drum Corps and Bass Viol in orchestra, I've filled in as bass clarinet or bassoon when needed. I also play guitar and violin and recently started on cello last year.

Bass guitar, euphonium, trombone, french horn, B flat clarinet, trumpet, tuba, and sousaphone.

There are very few of us who understand the difference between a tuba and a sousaphone. I marched in Drum Corp with a TUBA and HS Marching band with the Sousaphone.
