they're all pretty much the same weapon based martial arts. depends on what you have in your area. i say if you do have all 3, you should check it out and decide what is best for you...good luck

semantics really. it has more to do with the region that the system originates from.

btw, most fma are complete systems. that means they have a) weapons, b) stand-up (hands and feet striking), c) ground work (grappling/ submissions).

make sure that what you take up will have the flexibility to teach you all these.

note: btw, most schools will not show blade/ knife/ bolo work until you've been there a while. some filipinos find it insulting that you might ask to be shown some before they decide to teach it.

Who told you THAT?

They are names for the same art - not the same weapon

That is why most people who have done the arts for a while will use the term FMA (Filipino Martial Arts) rather that Eskrima/Kali/Arnis as they are all the same art.
But you have to remeber that there are over 100 recognised dialects in the Philippines not to mention the ones that are not officially recognised so therfore the terminologies vairy as much as the dialects.
And yes Silat is a member of the FMA as well as being an art from Malaysia and Indonesia. Kuntao Silat for instance comes from the Philippines.

Some people get confused because the think they are different arts it is just a geographical difference, nothing else. Most FMA systems teach all aspects of the art, from solo, to double weapons, empty hands to grappling.

So don't worry if the use the term Arnis, Eskrima or Kali they as they say are all the same. It is only the style that may differ slightley.

All the best in you search

Nah. The basic weapon in FMA is the stick, called a baston or olisi depending on dialect, etc. But they do generally just get called "arnis sticks" for example.
