Ok we have all pretty much heard of Royce Grace etc. But I wondering is there any famous Japanese Ju jitsu fighters out there.
I heard something a while back about a Japanese Ju jitsu master beating Helio Grace way way back in the 30's or 50's or somthing, when Helio was saying how much better Grace Jiu jitsu is over Japanese Ju jitsu or something.
A part from that I have never heard of famous Japanese Ju jitsu fighters just Grace Jiu jitsu fighters such as the Grace's.
Oh by the way since I live in the UK I only have access to the standard 5 channels and the UFC and Pride etc as "Never" been on them. I have only heard about them when I started coming on this forum in October.
Also I am hoping to go the Royce Grace Seminar next month if it go's ahead in the kevin hall in Glasgow. It should be good to learn from this bad ass great fighter. Also is there anyone else here going to this.

Helio Gracie lost to a Japanese Judoka, Masahiko Kimura in 1951 -

Interview with Helio Gracie where he talks about the fight. It seems he passed out at one point but the ref didn't notice - in the end his corner threw in the towel after his shoulder was dislocated -

If you are interested in BJJ there is also a seminar by Nelson Solari (ex. World BJJ Champion) in July in A'deen -

You make that sound like 40 is old. Even thou that is a little under twice my age I still don't think it as old.
I only say there are old when they call me a kid etc i.e people usally 35+ call me a kid, but then I just call them grandad or something.
When the Iraq war was going on a an RAF jet was shot down by mistake and an officer said it was probably some 21 year old kid that the controls, and I was 22 at the time and going I'am no kid you old "beep"
BTW was Kimura not 34 or something when he beat Helio Gracie.

M Kimura was 34 and H Gracie was 36 when they fought in 1951.
Tatsumaru, may be the Kimura you are thinking of is a different person?

i wasn't just talking about kicking gracie butt :D
(from the article scaramouch posted) -
Santana challenged Kimura to have a rematch for Vale-tudo. (Everything goes, as it is equivalent to Ultimate Fighting Championship.)
On the day of the competition, there were 10,000 spectators present. From the beginning, Kimura realized that Santana punched and kicked much better. The only chance was newaza. Kimura made a mistake, and tried to throw Seoinage. Since both of them were soaked in sweat, without Judogis, Kimura fell to the mat. Santana followed with a straight punch and head-butt to Kimura's stomach, not once or twice, but three times. Kimura was stunned; however, he maintained his nerve and waited for his chance to counter. When Santana tried to head-butt for the fourth time, Kimura punched Santana's forehead-between the eyes-with all his strength. Santana, his face covered in blood, retreated.
Kimura got up from the mat and chased Santana. The fight lasted for 40 minutes with a draw, as both of them were exhausted, unable to do complete damage. Kimura was 42 years old at the time.

oh, and as for 40+ being old, it is for full contact drawn out sparring, i don't think many 40 year olds could still perform at peak level for hours at a time.

You are right Kimura was a legend. Didn't realise you were talking about one of his later, post-Gracie fights.
But it shows old style, Kodokan Judo was a pretty effective MA. Modern Judo still has the same range of techniques - just that most coaches focus, unfortunately, on the competition and not the martial side of things. Its ironic, in a way, that you have to go to BJJ to get closer to pre-WWII Kodokan Judo.

Oh right I fought you meant he was 40+ when he beat helio.
I reid everything scaramouch posted, It also turned out that the Grandmaster of the Ju jitsu style I do Kyushindo Ju jitsu, Kenshiro Abe beat Kimura in the their fist match. Then Kimura trained 9 hours a day with 1000 push ups and then beat Kenshiro Abe in the second match they had.

Kenshiro Abe was originally a Judo man. He later studied Aikido for many years under the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba.

Kyushindo Ju jitsu looks to me like a combination of Judo and Aikido (thats where the circular motion stuff comes from) with may be a street fighting edge. It doesn't, however, appear to have its roots in the ancient forms of Jujitsu from one of the old Japanese schools.

Thanks Acekicken I will do a Google search for them.
Scaramouch, I will try to remember and print off what you said about Kyushindo Ju jitsu on monday to show to my uncle who is the sensei who teaches for free, you don't get many of them.
I will post what he says on here.
I also what to try some Gracie Jiu jitsu because I am sick of getting tapped out on the ground in 2 seconds by my dad and his mates who have Judo backgrounds, plus it made me see that my ground fighting skills are pretty lame.

The question is not if they are Japanese or not, it is if they are any famous fighters who use a Japanese style of Ju jitsu.
The most famous seem to be Grace style Ju jitsu fighters i.e Royce Gracie and his brothers.
