I had the same problem initially :) MMA stands for "Mixed Martial Arts", although "Modern Martial Arts" is also used interchangably.

Guess where I'm moving this to :D
Something I want to know about MMA (please bear with me...)
What actually consitute's MMA? I've heard people who mix any two arts claim they do MMA, and I've heard people who only do Muay Thai and BJJ call it MMA (which is what I class it as). Then there's people who do any striking and grappling art i.e Boxing and Judo, or kickboxing and jujitsu.
So, which is it? :D

Depends on personal definition and how you look at it really. Some people think of it as training in all possible ranges from standup to clinch to the floor. Some people consider doing two arts MMA, which going by the name, is fair enough. To some people, that's cross-training. Then again, some people see it the other way round, and some people see them both as the same thing. I think that's why nobody has given you a real answer :D

i've always kind of hated the term...it would've been easier if they'd just called training in multiple styles cross training, and then referred to the actual sport of MMA as NHB.
oh well, um...i guess i should say some kind of rude superior MMA'er thing here?
grapplers > strikers? ;)

I disagree - NHB is meaningless as many H are B :D

Kgirl, MMA is the tag placed on the sport that would encompass Ultimate Fighting, Pride, King Of The Cage, IFC, IVT, ROTR, etc. If you have participated in this sport, you can call yourself a "mixed martial artist", regardless of your style.
MMA does not refer to the style, but the format. You can go in and fight with zero training and be a mixed martial artist. Granted, you will most likely never win, but that is the sport you have chosen.
If you participate in say, BJJ and Muay Thai, but don't compete in the organized sport of MMA, you are a "cross-trainer".
Who would win in a fight, the MMA fighter or the cross trainer?
The better fighter.
Hopefully.
Topic Mod to the rescue! Thanks Trent :D
All the rest of you can go away:p

What if you train in ONE club and ONE class that trains standup, clinch and ground using elements of Muay Thai, BJJ, Wrestling etc but you don't compete?
There are MANY people training in MMA clubs that don't compete in MMA just like there are many people who train regularly and spar in boxing gyms and Muay Thai clubs that never fight in the ring.
There's a very good MMA club about 10 miles from me - they have about 30 regular people training and only a hadndfull fight in competition.

Glad someone mentioned that... so despite the fact that i train kickboxing, boxing and jujitsu means im a cross-trainer and not a mmartist? simpley because the fact i havent been in a compitition yet? what if i had intention to fight in one?
Although i really dont mind what ppl say, weather they consider me a MMAist, a cross trainer, or even "a guy who does martial arts" it still dont stop me from being able to take their ass down to the ground and GnP it :)
It's just a name.

The term MMA was coined specifically as a more friendly way to describe "No Holds Barred" fighting. It's just a label. I've never really cared for the term. It just doesn't roll off the tongue as well.:D
As far as one club, one class training in all ranges of fighting, I would still call them cross trainers if they are using elements of several different arts. If their singular art encompasses all ranges, like Japanese JiuJitsu, I would just call them Martial Artists.

Hey! Wearing black spandex pants is COOL!
At first before i got into MMA they used to look weird; these guys wearing nothing in these dodgy pants... but now theres something cool about them :) and i want a pair! Especially the hunter one's with the white trim around either leg.

MMA is mixed martial arts. it is just a pc term because no holds barred is a phrase that makes people think of death matches or something. To appease ignorant politicians, the MMA is used describe the fact that martial arts disciplines can be used at the same time. Nothing more to it really.

To me, MMA mean when you do multiple arts such as like crosstraining but it's like Submission Fighting when striking is involve with striking hence MMA.
