there's a new rec. center just opened a few months ago near my place and one of the class they offer is called jujutsu, is there anybody out there can tell me if this is also the same as jujitsu? right now im trying to cross train between shotokan karate and some form of ground fighting (judo/jujitsu)

jujutsu and jujitsu are two ways of romanising the kanji shown below. Both words mean the same thing, though the "translating powers that be" decided a while back that jutsu was a more correct way to write the second kanji. However, for those of us who care less how the name is written, either is correct. For example, I practice Jujutsu with the jitsu foundation :)

Yeah, the only difference is in the spelling.

However, just to confuse matters there are hundreds of different styles of jujutsu out there, each specialising in different ranges of combat or even in specific techniques. Some are good, others are not so good. As such, the term jujutsu isn't actually all that informative in itself, so it's important to look into the style before commiting yourself to anything long-term.

There aren't really that many styles of authentic ju jutsu practised in the UK. Most are *******ised versions of the Budo systems "sold" as jujutsu to a gullible public and more gullible martial arts fraternity, and unfortunately, there is about 99% rubbish out there. So don't just check the spelling, check all their credentials, history, and ryu(as opposed to 'style').

Ju-jitsu is the 'correct' way to spell it. I've also been told that Ju-jutsu is ok too.

However, Brazilian Jiujitsu is often referred to as Jiu-jitsu. This was an error made many years back by the brazilians, but they chose to continue spelling it like this.

at the end of the day, noone cares. Training hard is all that matters!

Actually Jujutsu is the correct romanised way to spell it, but "accepted" (though often grudgingly) are jujitsu, jiujutsuy, jiujitsu, etc.

As you said though, in the long run it makes no different, the reason for the confusing in that the pronunciation of the second kanji lies somewhere between jutsu and jitsu and we have no normal way of writing such a sound.
