There's a brief explanation, and some links here;

To bring it into brief words:

San Da = chinese kickboxing. Note that San Da also incorperates throwing the opponent.

San Shou = More of a FreeStyle combat art that consists of effective parts of multiple styles (including San Da!). In San Shou there are forms of ground combat as wel!

That is what my Sifu says; He has been in the chinese military and had been with the non-military san shou stuff from the beginning so he should know.

while i think that the degradation of martial arts by "superior" ones have gone far enough, san shou is basically a combination of all modern streetfighting techniques, plus training methodology. it is ridiculed by fools as just a copy of kickboxing, but i find san shou to be far more advanced.

I would like to add to that that you still need a lot of training to reach anything that even resembles perfection and that it is a lot of hard work to get any good; and not only for San Shou but for anything (in life).
