Teaching yourself an art is a very hard thing to do. There are books on JKD, try http://www.amazon.co.uk and search for JKD and Bruce Lee.
There are also videos available but to be honest without an actual teacher you are only learning the techniques and not what the art is all about.
Best of luck :)

Sure. Reserch, passion, diligence, patience, and critical thinking skills are what you need to teach yourself.

have you had any formal training? i believe in being able to partically self teach but without some years of formal training self teaching is basically too hard for most people to do

In a limited way.

You will at the least need training partners.

Then I would recommend avoiding "stylized" systems, and sticking to sport based ones (boxing / wrestling / submission / Kickboxing)

Lots of books, lots of videos, lots of attention to detail. And at every opportunity train with an instructor.

1 hour away, fine make the trip once a week, or even once a month, but try to at least make it once and a while.

But it is no subsititute for a school and a instructor.

You could always read about JKD, and apply the concepts of it to another MA you study. At least do one, for the workout and conditioning, and take from it what you feel is good (according to JKD concepts), and leave out what's bad.

However you might piss the instructors off if you only concentrate on a few moves and disregard the rest, and you'll get into bad habits if they teach you stupid moves or drills.
