Ok MAPers
What exactly are you doing right NOW?
Apart from reading this post on MAP that is :D
Where are you? Home? Work? Other?
What other browser windows do you have open? (Keep it clean MAPers LOL!)
What SHOULD you be doing right now? :D
I'm sat here at home, working (It's SUNDAY!!!!) on the design of a Document Management systen in MS-Access - Very boring.
Popping into MAP now and then to relieve the boredom.
I'm also waiting for the tumble dryer to stop then I can take that load out, put the load that's just finished washing in there, and put the kids school uniforms in the next wash load. (Yes - I'm a fully trained domestic slave!)
I have 2 other windows open...

Just got home from training, and half watching Robin Hood on TV. Nice quarterstaff moment just coming up. "Alright my old cocker, you want another walloping, you shall have one." Ahh, such inspired dialogue.
Also waiting for my chicken Kievs to come out of the oven.
Should be doing uni work, but then again, I should always be doing uni work but never am.

Kinda reminds me of an old quote....
Two Uni students deciding what to do for the evening....
"Let's toss a coin - if it's heads we go to the pub, tails we go to a gig, if it lands on it's edge we'll do some work" :D

I've just got home from work - i've been outside painting a house and it's been freezing all day! BUT YODA...when you first posted this yesterday i was at a 50's/60's rock'n'roll concert (Bobby Vee - Brian Highland - the chiffons an' a few others) T'was very good! i had free tickets cos i agreed to collect for charity when it was over(this was in part thanks to YODA - the post about going with the flow?; This concert came up, didn't fell like going but went with the flow) As it happens i got talking to a doorman there and we had a good chat 'bout martial arts, he was a student in Ed parkers American kempo and a very interesting guy! I also got to talking with avid Beatles fan (as am i) - i had a terrific night. I'll be going with the flow much more often! Who knows where it might lead? Cheers YODA!

Anyways, it's 10:00 am and I'm on MAP again. I'm debating on going to day class or night class. I have an hour to make up my mind LOL. If I don't go at all, I won't have class till next week (dojang is closed for Thanksgiving). I would definitely go stir-crazy with no training, but I have no choice :(

Yeah - it's to errrr...... manage our documents :D
It's an Access database to track & manage Civil Engineering projects. At the moment it's just Access via our internal network but long term it will go online (probably via ASP.net) so that our remote people (On site etc) can get easy access via a web browser.
ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.............

I wasnt sure if you were writing it as an 'internal' product or something you would sell externally. We've been evaluating DM systems recently - iManage, Hummingbird and Sharepoint have been the main contenders. Will probably end up developing our own solution using Sharepoint as the base.
OK - have sent myself to sleep now.

Still, managed to get an inwards punch through his guard when it was my turn to attack, although to be fair he did slip it, trap it, and tie me up into a knot.

Hmmm...nursing a lot of bruises!
Attended a stick seminar held by stump yesterday that included take downs - more details later :D
Did training today as well - lots of self defence drills which included a lot of very painful 'proper' techniques as we have gradings coming up next week. Alas...I'm not ready to grade..so will miss it this time but I intend to frighten my Sensei with my techniques and skill at the next grading next semester!!!! Also I am thinking about entering a kata comp in March 2003...lets see how I get on :)
The unwise one
01-Dec-2002, 11:10 PM
How do you view Kata Mel ? im interested Do you not find that Kata has changed so much from the old days that the majority of the moves seem more like a dance than being useful ?
Not a criticism
but more of an observation.
:)

Hmmm...its nice that you ask me Oh unwise one...but I am not the most experienced here. Going by the information I have learnt over the past few years, I can only comment on so much..but I'll comment anyway...:D
I find kata useful to a certain degree. I have found it useful on a fitness level - a timing level and on an aesthetic level. I don't find any of them useful so far for a self defence level - but I enjoy the strict regime of Shotokan and the pacing up and down a hall thats why I do it.
Its been said that the lower stances were brought about to teach discipline and strength, etc to the students as this 'art' was initially directed at Japanese schools. I have seen pictures of Gichin Funakoshi practically standing up in stances whereas we today have a constant fight with gravity!! I haven't really been doing Shotokan for long enough to studied its background deep enough to make my own judgements on these remarks. At the end of the day you get what you put in to your martial arts and everyone wants something different. Whilst I still find it rewarding and meet some incredibly informed and open minded people (which I have) I shall continue to study Kata with as much enthusiasm as I have now...I much prefer kata to kumite anyway ;)
The unwise one
02-Dec-2002, 07:38 AM
The thing with stances low one's in particular they are ok and can help strenthen the legs somewhat but the if your tall and slim the best of the stance iv always found in the past were those of Kowazowi I had great admiration for his Shotokan his cat stances and found I was able to move alot faster with them especially for kumite.
I think the only thing abut Kata I found to be quite useful was it tought me the ability to breath correctly and can help to define certain techniques (moves).
But in the end if you enjoy doing it thats great.
I was just curious as to what you actually thought about it :-)
C :-)
