MA just needs more girls in general - there aren't many who last. Do you think the drop-out rate is higher for females than males?

teacher
17-Jun-2003, 09:32 PM
Male here, but it is a shame more girls dont try MA. I know many teenage girls who have benefited from training in so many differeny ways. I somehow hoped the Buffster might have at least encouraged more to try it. Girls are we doing something wrong?

Saz
17-Jun-2003, 09:54 PM
I don't know if its higher for men or women, but i know they drop out for different reasons. Most women I know who go into it, stick at it, maybe because we feel we have to prove ourselves more, i don't know. I've noticed guys tend to drop out when they fail gradings more than girls do.

I know a lot of my (female) friends think "why would you want to fight? That's a guy thing." Or a lot of them are afraid of what people might think. We need to show them that girls CAN to MA, and that it's cool.

I'm thinking that if instructors could somehow organize demonstrations at schools, especially all girls schools (I'm at one), then girls could work up the courage to try it in a group, then when all those who would only have come for a day anyway have dropped out, the girls who would be genuinely intesrested have gotten involved, and don't feel stupid turning up.

However, orgainizing it could be difficult, and most MA instrucors have jobs as well. That's just something I think might have gotten me involved earlier.

It's unfortunate the low female population in grappling/submission fighting arts. It seems to me to be considerably lower than that of stand-up fighting. My Kung Fu class has several girls, but my Jujitsu class has only got one. (Can you guess who she is?)

I just voted "male" (because I am). At our school, we have Hapkido and Taekwondo.... we have more women in Taekwondo than Hapkido... despite the fact that we specifically aim some of our Hapkido topics at women's self defence!

Our master is male, of the two senior instructors, I am male and the other is female (ranked in TKD and Combat Hapkido as well). We do get quite a few female students (college age), but I would 'guestimate' the ratio of men: women as being around 2:1

Kinjiro Tsukasa

I think it does depend on the art. My Tai Chi class has several women, but I'm one of only two women in my Budo Taijutsu class.

Hey, you should include option for people who are confused, or perhaps in between and getting a medical. *cough* *cough* Freeform *splutter* :p

It's nice to have girls here. However, I don't think matters to have more girls here or not. Sure, if they happen to drop in - let's encourage them and welcome them with open arms (remember the deodarant). We should extend the same hospitality to the boys too.

We're not here to entice romance the ladies - this isn't Love Match. For that use your local club and your instructors privileges :p

If you feel its too much, don't respond to it.

I actually thought you were a guy (and one or two other's in this thread) until I read it, so maybe we do.

Most people assume "guy" on the internet. It is very hard to tell if someone is male or female just by looking at an avatar and they're posts. And don't say "I've got a female looking avatar, that means I must be a girl." Member Sokklab has Catwomen as his avatar, and for a while I thought he was a girl!

Anyway, I think ladies tend to drop out more, because they don't focus on the fighting aspect of martial arts. Though, there are women who do love to fight, just alot of women are more passive than men are.

I know what your mean, though the main prob I has is guys at TKD anyway all calling me 'feisty' because I'm an agressive fighter. Really - how many guys over the age of six get called 'feisty' ?
You don't know whether to laugh or be annoyed when your told by the coach "Don't flinch. Your one of the few chicks I know who can take a hit. I've never seen that from you before and don't want to see it again..."
I know heaps of chicks that can 'take a hit.' They just react in different ways. I just tend to get angry  :D (I'm a better now though - last nationals some of the BB guys gave up punching me in the head when my guard was low and started messing my hair up cause I dropped it so often. i think the rest of us ladies are too lazy to take this poll :D also, i agree that the reason why most females dont take MA is because of what others think of them. my friends at school look at me kinda funny if i wanna do pushups for gym, my bro seems embarrassed of me everytime i jab @ him, me mum doesn't understand why i love TKD and my dad wanted me to do ballet when i was young (bleh).

oh yeah, why do all the men (well, most) on MAP who have taken this poll have to make sure that they're guys?

Look around your Dojo. Is there a majority of male or female? Most people in martial arts are males. It is a strongly male oriented society, it was started to be that way. Women have invaded and shown that it doesnt matter what sex you are just that you have a love for what you do, that you do it well, try hard, and ultimately have fun with it. Thats why I joined the martial arts community and here. By the way..............Im a girl.

Peter: It's a beautiful baby girl!
Carol: Oh, a girl! I'm so happy!
Peter: But it has a penis. (Picks up scalpel.) I'll take care of that.

I agree that martial arts is a male dominated sport (i'm a female by the way) but i find a lot of the girls at my club aren't that passionate which is pretty sad and spend most of the class fixing there hair or talking about the guys. I know a few girls that are just as passionate as me but i think they're hard to come by which really bothers me because it gives a bad impression of female martial artists!!!

I'm very passionate, and I hate it when girls come in and act like that. There are a few girls like that in my class, but most of them are not, and I think thats great.

I am most definitely a woman and I love men. That makes martial arts even more enjoyable if you ask me.

It's interesting but in my experience the young girls are very focused and intense but most of the adult women in my dojang seem to be there just to get a workout rather than to develop their martial arts skills. Too bad. The younger girls could benefit from seeing more devoted and committed female martial artists (such as myself :) ). I really wish I personally knew more women martial artists. It's nice to see all the women on MAP.
