Hi everyone,
Does anybody know of a JKD instructor called Emil Martirossian? He teaches locally to me and I believe he has been featured in the martial arts press, so was considering tracking down his class. Does anybody here come across him?

I've never heard of him personally but depending upon when this was written if your interest is JKD and not TKD or Judo i would look to one of the more experienced teachers in london.
Bob breens school is in london and has a very good reputation
As my only source of info is this article i may well be very wide of the mark!!!!

Many thanks for link Pug32!
I understand that he's since been to the US to train under Dan Inosanto. I'm pretty sure he also has the occasional column in one of the UK martial arts magazines.

hello there "huge ego" I'm a student of Emil's. He teaches in Hove at the Corals dog stadium. He is a well qualified teacher and his classes are very good. Yes he did train under Dan Inosanto as well as Clive MacKensie. He writes articles for fighters mag as well as numerous others. Hope this has been of some use to you. Keep up the fight the Bruce Lee way. Respect. J

Hi there "gifted1"
Many thanks for confirming what I'd heard. I see Emil has an article in April's Fighters magazine. Once I've recovered from injury, I'll likely check out his class. Do you know what days and times he teaches at Corral's?
By the way, please excuse my name - I'm trying to think up a better one!
For how long have you been training in JKD? Did you do anything before Emil's JKD? Any idea how long Emil spent with Dan Inosanto? What are his classes like? I'm curious to know how JKD training runs and is structured. Any and all info would be gratefully received.
Many thanks!

Hello again "Huge Ego". I'm not sure exactly how long Emil trained with Dan but i know he did four years with Clive. Yeap a good article in Fighters about when Emil went to Japan. The Classes vary both in sizes and in structure. We do alot of curcuit style training to tune bodies for stamina and it can knock the stuffing out of you but you slowly get used to it. I have only been going a couple of months and keep up with the guys and gals now but i remember my first session-I turned up in a pair of jeans and a jumper and flacked out after the first ten minutes. Emil wouldn't mind you just coming along for a look as it will give you a bit more of an insight. Erm, the next session is on thursday at 9 pm. Just come along and meet him, he is a sound bloke with time for everyone. He has showed me so much in a short space of time. When the weather is good we also train in hove park, that feels really surreal at first but you get used to it. Towards the end of a session we do some light sparring which helps you apply what has been learnt so you get to practice all movements which encourages self growth. We are off to Birmingham on Saturday to watch Emil do a nunchaku demo and also entering a competition in may, so you can see the group is going places. Honestly, Emil will not mind you coming and having a look so try and pop in on Thursday. Take care and keep fighting the Bruce Lee way. J
hey are you Jason or Jesse? because if you are then it's me HOWARD.
Emil is basically more than you think 'huge ego'. His classes are excellent and run all the time. I go to his classes on SUNDAYS at 2pm till 4pm. Go to the Hove Coralls centre. JKD is a very special and very technical thing (I'd say way but the fact is there is no way in JKD). I'm not mislead about JKD because I also have done classical styles and also do Tae-Kwon-do just as often as JKD. And JKD really is different in a good way. Anyway tell me your name so if I meet you I'll know. See ya guys.

Whoops sorry "Huge Ego". A slight variation to what i told you. Emil has been training with Clive Mackensie for over nine years. Just needed to clarify that with you. Sorry for getting it wrong. Are you going to come on Thursday? Hello to you Howard its Jason. Why are you sin binned man?

Why are you sin binned man?
Somehow, I don't think he's going to be able to answer the question!
Why are you sin binned man?
Because he was trolling the karateka here, and didn't stop when I gave him a fair chance to do so.

Many thanks to one and all for the info about Emil's teaching. So classes are 2 - 4:00 pm on Sundays and 7 - 9:00 pm on Thursdays at Corral's then. (Are there any other days/times? Is it obvious where to go in the stadium?) Temporarily, my only training is at the physio (!) but I'll check things out soon when I'm recovered.
However, I read Emil's article in this month's Fighters magazine.
Please excuse my ignorance, but who is Clive Mackensie?
Thanks again,
"H.E."

It's pretty easy to find. go to the fitness bit at the south of the building rather than the dog bit. Looking forwards to meeting you. hope the physio is going ok, All the best Jason.

Hi Jason,
Cool, many thanks again for the further info. I look forward to meeting you too. Physio is going slowly but steadily, so I could be off training for some weeks. However, I'll introduce myself properly in person. (Don't like giving out personal info on the world wide web.) I might even have thought up a better MAP name than Huge Ego by then!
Thanks and all the best

Hi there Jason and Howard,
I've just had my first lesson with Emil, which was great. Injury meant I had to focus on trapping and the like, but I hope to be well enough to join a class eventually. (Probably the Saturday class at Alive, but I'll introduce myself if I do go to Corral's. Also, as you can see, I now have a new MAP name.)
You were right: Emil is very good. The instruction was great, I learnt plenty and enjoyed myself.
Emil said that he was initially certified as a JKD instructor by Clive, then later by Dan Inosanto. We're extroadinarily lucky to have such an instructor locally.
I now have a lot of new stuff to remember, so will be looking out for a book or video as a refresher. Anybody got any special recommendations?
Hope the training is going well.

Hello Sandy, I just wanted to tell you the times again as i think some of my info could be wrong, so here goes:-
Mon 9-11
Wed 8-10
Thur 9-11 (we also do demo training 7-9)
Sat 7.30-9.30
Sun 2-4
All classes are now at the Corral's. Sorry i don't have no training video's or books, I know a fair few of the students read "The Tao of Jeet Kune Do". Emil would probably be able to advise you better on such things. Take care and all the best. Jason.

Hi there,
Many thanks for the updated info. I managed to pick up one of Emil's flyers with the training times on it too. As well as Corral's classes, I see Emil also teaches from 2 to 3 o'clock on Saturday afternoons at LA Fitness in Brighton. (My earlier post was wrong.)
How's your training going? Have you been doing JKD for long? If any, how much other martial arts had you done before JKD? What sort of backgrounds do people have in the class? While my background's predominantly rusty Thai/kick boxing from my youth, I did supplement this with ving tsun for a few months. I was unimpressed with my ving tsun class at the time. However, my first impression of JKD is that it's a very much more practical adaptation of wing chun. (Although I realise there's more to it than that!)

Hi again Sandy. I hadn't really done much else before JKD apart from a bit of boxing with my brother and i used to do weights up the gym but this is the first time i have really got my teeth into something as i enjoy it so much. I've only been going to Emil's classes for about six months and have just managed to get my first rank, only another seven to go lol. Take care. J

Hi again :)
Your fist rank ... ? I wasn't aware there were ranks in JKD. (Although I personally prefer them for structure, something to aim for and the feeling of achievement.)
What will I need to know/do for the first rank? My injury is healing slowly, so I expect I'll be doing private training with Emil for a while yet before I am healthy enough to join in class.

Hi Sandy. JKD isn't really about rank although i agree with what you said in that it give you something to aim for. It is hard for me to explain what i had to do as i was quite nervous and am just glad to be through it. It was pretty intensive ans very strict but i suppose that is the norm for such things. Have you had any more lessons since? Hope the leg is holding out for you. Take care. J

Hi,
Yes, I've managed another lesson with Emil in the park and have a couple more lined up. We're only doing trapping, punching drills and the like. Once I'm healthy enough to start kicking again, I hope to join the class and look forward to meeting you.
I saw Email's latest article in Fighters magazine - very philosophical!
