For Dummies books generally try to be funny or make fun of the subject that the dummy is reading up on to keep him entertained. the problem. martial arts isn't funny

Jen Lawler is highly qualified. It is an okay book, strictly for beginners. Laid out very simple and organized well. Take a look if you find it cheap (halfpriced books).
GuitarBoy. If MA's is such a chore, why practice them? Anything can be fun if approached with the right attitude.

i was about to buy this book but i suspected that it was a little bit too simple
for example: page one karate, page two kung fu. i would like the read lik 7 chapters on every single style

I was issued this book at my school. It's a good overview of the most popular styles. Mostly history with a few techniques thrown in.

I haven't read that Dummies book, but I like the Dummies series as well as the Complete Idiot's series as well. Nicely designed in bite-size chunks.
I would, however, recommend the Complete Idiot's Guide to Karate by Edmond Otis and Randall Hassell. I thought it was excellent, and very nicely put together too.

It would be awesome if dummies could fight back, that way if you dont have a training partner..

That's not funny. That is...............horrible!
The funny part comes when you here them talk to their girlfriends afterwards.

Dummies really don't have too much to learn in MA, do they? They just stand there while people practice on them.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Kickboxing (cowritten by Guy Metzger of the Lion's Den) isn't half bad either.
