Just wanting to know what's you're favorite kung-fu animal?

As for me, it's the tiger, I think:confused:
It used to be the dragon............
praying mantis also.

Ok, I'm confused:confused:

Anyway, lets hear yours, I'll get back to you on my decision;)

Also tell us something about your animal and why it's your favorite.

Since I'm willing to bet just about every animal is somewhere in the kung-fu pantheon, I'd go for the orangutang.

Hmmm, year of the Goat here, then again, I've been told I have a nice butt!

As an animal, I'd have to be some kind of crosbred terrier. I go for the throat, lock my jaw, and don't let go till it's gone cold and stiff!

I think I have no favorite animal I try and eqaul them all out.
That way if you face a tiger lover you kan defend better and attack with agility speed and control at the same time

I guess that I'd have to be Crane as the art I teach is Paihequan Wuyangkuan (Crane-Fist) :)

Both the Tiger and Leopard (Pak Mei). The strength of a tiger, And the speed of the leopard seem to complement each other quite nicely.

someone truly in balance would love them equally.. for they all serve a specific need and where developed to address different strikes.. I love them all because they all have their place. in nature and martial arts.

Good luck to you WFH.

'Shaolin' covers a heck of a lot of different systems.

Where in the world are you, and what schools have you been looking into?

Wong Fei Hung

In the world , ok I'm in The U.S. and since I was small I have been intrested in Shaolin and the monks alot. Since I grew up a little bit more I have learned about the monks history and their martial arts.

Gotcha.

I believe the 'Wheel of Life' people have been spreading licensed Shaolin schools all over the world. I'll see if I can find the link for you and pass it on. I know some guys who trained with these guys, and they're very good.

Also check out the photo gallery here. Ghostsuits photo gallery has pictures of them, and he got to meet some of them too.

Where in the US are you. You're member profile is blank you see.

I live in Florida, I have seen this movie called "Wheel of Life," its about Shaolin. Its is pretty cool.

Andy Murray

That's the guys I was talking about.

It'll be tough for someone your age to start up, but not impossible.

I had a colleague who went over to China and trained with these guys, and more recently ther was a seminar in the UK some of my mates attended.

My age ,I'm 12 years old but you probaly need Alot of money to train with those guys.It would be cool but I wouldn't be able to anyways. The only way is like to win the lottery. lol .

I'll try to name most of the Shaolin animals:

-Tiger
-Dragon
-Panther
-Snake
-Jaguar
-Horse
-Elephant
-Monkey
-Crane
-Lion

There are more than those 10 animals of Shaolin I think.

Mine would be the Monkey although i do like Tiger and Snake very much.If you don't know Monkey it is very hard to fight against.Monkey is very tricky and powerful and usually underestimated as a style.

What does anyone think of Huen Kuen kung fu?

David

What about the idea that any animal done right doesn't need 'balancing out' any more than the animals themselves need to pretend to be other animals to defend themselves in their niche?

Understand your specialism deeply and pay attention to how the others do it, I say. You have to be able to face another 'animal' and WANT them to use their animal's nature on you because you've already decided how to deal with it.

Easier said than done? Good!

Hi david.
I think deciding how your gonna deal with any situation b4 it hapens is a bad idea.I mean i wold personaly try to get moves as instic rather than decide to use a certain move, which may turn out to be bad for that situation.

David

I mean that a goat should use all it's goatness when fighting a tiger because there's nothing else it can do. A goat excels at being a goat and if it can make the tiger play that game then the goat wins. The goat should aspire to be goat enough to take the meanest tiger whilst humming a happy little song to itself.

Asking people which is their favourite animal will usually get the response "I study x so x is my fave" and then it's "well y beats x" etc. Each animal contains the others, I think so there's nothing alien about encountering another - it's just a matter of the degree to which you understand and can implement it, the greater the understanding (even if only at a level of recognition) then the less likely you are to be phased by or psyched-out by this new beast.

rgds,
David

When I onsider how to fight another style, I don't get any more specific than things like "OK, careful about feints" or "right, I gotta rush him at the first kick" or "gotta be quick on my feet" or "let's make an opening for him". You know what I mean?

And what I mean by that is a recognition of the different balances of forces and forms and having the confidence to bend your animal to the task.

David

Ahhh.Thanks.
Now, while i think u make a good point.I would never fight in one animal stance for agreat length of time.It would makemy moves to predictable.Instead i would assume a general fighting stance and use what ever moves or techniques, from any style or animal that i have studied, that came naturally to me.

Like an auto defence. All the way through studying the MA all my instructors (and not just in MA in music too) have said that i thik about things to much. This makes my movements jerky and ineffective.I now feel that although i do that sometimes, i have a more natural way of fighting.

Which i personaly would favour above standing in a stance that dictates ur moves.

David

I agree - kungfu is ONLY static in photos,

The only time you have to worry about your stance is when contact is made because at that moment your stance is keeping you upright and being the platform for your offense. Normally, you'd be moving in/out, circling, running etc so you won't get cramped into a stance.

David

AH right.
Sorry about that.I hate discussing things on forums becuase they sometimes turn into huge arguments over nothing. It's hard to show tone etc on forums, even with smileys.
