Met a Hung-gar student in Louisville that informed me that a Chinese uniform is called a Sam or Sams (plural). Not certain about the spelling.

"Saam" is cantonese for clothes. (also sounds like 3)

So you can say "Gung-fu Saam" and generally people will understand.

Gi just means clothes in Japanese.

Old style BJJ calls the uniform a kimono. Some schools still use that term.

It's "dobak" in Korean, if you're interested.

I thought other words were; zhangi fu, or zhi fu, or yi fu.

From my experience, TCM really don't address their work-out clothing as anything but "clothing"

太极服 (Tai Ji Fu) literally clothes for Tai Ji, but you are better off explaining what you want or they might look at you with round eyes... :D

功夫服 (Gung Fu Fu) is not used, but I thought it was hilarious! :D

Osu!

PS: That's Mandarin... other dialects will be different.

So.... what we need are the words for----

T-shirt

sneakers

pants

(Preferably in both Cantonese and Mandarin).

That's what uniforms in CMAs generally are.

In Canto, in not so exact phonetic...

Doon Jow Saam = Short sleeve clothing (usually would mean top)
Doon Jow Fu = short sleeve trousers/bottoms

Replace Doon with Cheurng (Long)..
ie - Cheurng Jow Saam - Long sleeve clothes

Bor Hai - literally means "Ball Shoes" = trainers/sneakers

Obviously everthing is within context.

The Chinese wrestling jacket is called Da Lian (搭褳).

Traditionally wrestlers wear jacket called "Da Lian (搭褳)" and chaps over their pants, which allow grapping on the chaps for lifting.
