The Star Wars Trilogy on DVD
February 10, 2004

The most requested films for the DVD format will finally become a reality this September as Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox present the eagerly-awaited Star Wars Trilogy for the ultimate home entertainment format. The four-disc collection will be released on September 21 in the U.S. and Canada, with international release dates following closely.

"We know how long fans have waited for this release and how much they have been looking forward to it, so everyone has been working overtime to make sure that the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD is an awesome experience," said Jim Ward, Vice President of Marketing and Distribution for Lucasfilm Ltd. and the DVD collection's Executive Producer.

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi will be available in a four-disc set that includes a bonus disc filled with all-new special features -- including the most comprehensive feature-length documentary ever produced about the Star Wars saga and never-before-seen footage from the making of all three films. Each of the three films in the Star Wars Trilogy has been digitally restored and re-mastered by THX for superior sound and picture quality.

"First and foremost, the DVDs will deliver the very best possible sound and picture and take advantage of everything the medium can offer. On top of that, we are creating added-value material that gets inside the creation of the Star Wars films in a fresh and fun way," Ward said. "We want watching this DVD collection to be as memorable as seeing the movies for the first time."

The films of the Star Wars Trilogy will be available exclusively as a collection and will feature Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX. All three films are closed-captioned and subtitled in English, French and Spanish in the U.S. Internationally, sound and subtitling specifications will vary by territory. Keep checking starwars.com over the coming months for more specific details about the content of this must-own DVD set.

This will sound selfish but I wish they would wait until closer to Christmas to release it. There is no way my husband will wait for me to buy it for him for Christmas - he'll be lined up on September 21st with all the other Star Wars fans :( . Just when you find the perfect present for someone who has everything! Darn release date :woo:

I know it'll be the "enhanced" versions but at least it's something.

Here's hoping that Lucas'll realise that they were best left alone & release the orig as well

You mean other than some of the worse over use of CGI EVER and a truly poo ending on "jedi", not really :p

The great thing about the orig's was that they were ground breaking, they took the tech that was available then & used a great story to flesh it out & make you believe (unlike the new ones :woo: ) if the changes he made actually added anything to the story then that would be cool but all it does is take away their charm & make them look like run of the mill effects movies. It's not fair

Hmm. sounds like a scam from Mr Lucas to me to make money. He always said DVD wouldn't take off and he wouldn't release them. Now that he sees it has, he smells the money.

And 4 disks in my opinion isn't very much for the trilogy (kinda like the Indiana Jones 4 disk set). I would have expected something on a par with the 9 disk Aliens Quadrilogy (which is excellent). There must be tons of extras lying around to fill more than 1 disk. Especially with all the work done around the time of the Special Edition. I think they are holding out on us.

My prediction - 4 disk edition. Then a 6 disk Ultimate Edition of the trilogy containing Special Edition, Original Edition, and extras. Then a 6 disk Special Edition of the 6 movies. Then a 12 disk Ultimate Edition. Then a ninety-ten disk version containing all movies in all formats and tons of extras. And we will probably buy every single boxset he releases!!

We have the ET DVD (lay off we have a 3yr old and she loves it!) and it includes both the modified "guns are bad mkay so lets make them walkie-talkies" edition and the original theatrical release. Maybe SW will be the same...

Man. I loved the Indy box set (Although no directors commentries :( ) so the Star Wars ones are gonna be amazing. I can't wait.

Judging by your avatar, you like Aliens. And have you seen the Alien Quadrilogy boxset. Star Wars could easily equal/better that if they tried.

Possibly. But i don't wanna spend £60 on 9 DVDs that has extras (not to mention two films!) that i don't really want. I would prefer a 4 Disc set with a heathly and interesting set of extras.

From here (http://www.dvdanswers.com/index.php?r=0&s=1&c=3277&n=1&k=star+wars+trilogy&burl=r%3D0%26g%3Dinfo%26s%3D1%26k%3Dstar%2Bwars%2B trilogy)
are three different package designs in total. A Imperial Collection, a Final Conflict set (with good old Darth himself) and the rather ugly Jedi vs Dark Side set. Whether or not all three of these designs will be available in September is still unclear.
