hello,
this may sound like a silly questions but ill ask them anyway.
I want to start boxing, i have done aikido for one and a half years. But i feel that their effectiveness would be far improved with the knowledge of how to box. I am quite a timid person, and although i am confident in my ability and have good focus, i am not sure how i would get on in the macho atmosphere generated at alot boxing clubs with an opponent wanting to bash my head up. I dont mind being hit in the face, i have had fights with boxing gloves with mates before, but i dont want to join a boxing club only to get a new broken nose every week, i like my nose?
Can u be good at boxing without being aggresive in the ring?
thanks for any replys

Is that view based on what you've seen, what you've heard, or what you've guessed?
Find the right club - a proper ABA club with qualified coaches. I'm sure you'll do fine.
No.
Boxing is an aggressive sport. Aggressive is not a bad thing, it doesn't have to have a negative connotation. Is like being assertiveness. Boxing requires several skills to perform great ring-manship.

While yes, boxing is an aggressive sport, it is wrong to think that everyone in the gym just wants to plow your head into submission. Learning the process of boxing is a painful process, much like Thai boxing can be. But the students and coaches want you to excel and learn.
Nowwww, saying that...learning lessons can be rough, but you will remember them. For example, I had a problem dropping my hands and just wanting to start swinging wildly (when you're 12 you can sometimes tend to be rather excited). I was told that the next time I dropped my hands that I would be hit in the nose and sure enough, I got hit and hard enough to make my eyes water and ring my bell and my nose was sore for weeks, but not broken. Guess what, I never dropped my hands after that day. Of course, it is imperative in boxing that one does not drop their hands...strategy and endurance are the names of the game.
There are plenty of good boxing clubs out there. My advice is just like any school you'd be curious about (or club for boxing). Check a couple out and make your decision, talk to the trainers and tell him what you are looking for and they will be more than happy to help you out.

You can back away the whole fight, but you'd look stupid. If you get hit in the stomach just breath and enable chi flow.

strangely, boxing is not all aggression. boxing is also a thinking man's game. what you do, whether you attack, counter-attack, defend and attack depends on how the game unfolds.
mostly, gyms are very friendly places. people go there to learn. it's just like your aikido dojo, you'll be forming bonds that last.
pick a good gym and you'll be taken cared of.
there is a lot of skill in boxing!

As Yoda says
Try and find out what the clubs in your area are like. If you dont like the way the training goes then dont keep going.
A good amatuer club will keep you straight.
A good coach wont let mismatches get out of control. So dont think that boxing training is all about getting beat up :)

Most Boxing gyms have a competitive atmosphere, but hatefull agresion is not the norm. Boxing gyms are like the military, tough, and sometimes "mean, but one of the best fraternities of friends you could get. They may be hardasses, but they want you to win.
