I have seen a certian kamae used in a number of videos and pictures. it seems to be from Togakure Ryu. it looks like ichimonji no kamae, but with the rear knee on the ground. it's like a croutching version of ichimonji. I'v seen this listed as jai goshi no kamae. I was wondering if this was the actual name of it?

also, I was wondering what the name of the kamae is that looks like ichimonji, but with the rear hand placed on the hip in a fist. I'v seen this listed as sanshin no kamae, katate no kamae, and bobi no kamae. is there a difference between these? is it ryu specific?

thank you in advance to anyone who can answer.

Without seeing a picture (and all my books are packed away for my upcoming move) I can't directly answer your question. However, various Ryu have the same kamae, yet call it different names and each will have some slight variation to it. Depending on what each Ryu specialized in, dictates the differences in the kamae.

ok, I found the link to the site that lists its name. I don't know if this helps, but hopefully. it's the bottom, middle picture (the jai goshi no kamae).

(the bottom left picture is the katate/bobi/sanshin no kamae I mentioned)

The one bottom left could be either Shoshin or Bobi. Shoshin is defensive with more weight on the back leg and Bobi is more attacking with weight even on both feet.

the picture looks like the warrior is coming out of a zenpo kaiten to me just waiting for him to stand up and turn around into Ichimonji no kamae, or it is a posture for ground fighting that he himself has developed???? that is my best guess....Cloud

according to Joel Everett, this kamae is called hanza no kamae. I can't find any pictures on it though, but I'v found multiple online glossarys that discribe it as such.

http://www.dokidoki.ne.jp/home2/unoaiki/P16.html has a picture on it refuring to hanza and it looks a lot like the picture of what that warrior was doing, but it is an akido martial art??? so as far as it relate to ninjutsu, or ninpo we will have to wait and see what Kurhana has to say....

Hehe - I wonder if, even without worrying about what it's called or where it came from, it follows the principles of taijutsu, and I'd say yeah, sure looks like its the precursor to taking some other stance after rolling forward or back or something, but I feel like it's limited in that it's calling itself a stance (I assume, not being able to read the site's language) when it ought best be thought of as a transition, like a snapshot taken of a body in motion.

Matter of fact, since all kamae are supposed to be considered footwork and positioning, as opposed to some way the body holds itself in repose, seeing it there makes me feel like it's this one guys way of moving his body through that transitional point, and thus of no real use to me or others. Maybe if there had been an explanation below it...
