which would you think is better for overall oblique development? alternatively, what are the merits of each and for what is which of them better?

Osu,

I am not sure of the difference between the two exercises, could you please explain the distinction you are making? :)

one is isometric, the other is dynamic :)

Osu,

Thanks... They are basically the same exercises...
I'd say you'll be less likely to cheat on the planks. :)

Why not do both:
1 min plank followed by 10 reps bridges?
rinse, repeat! ;)

Osu,

LOL ---- and hold a 16Kg kettlebell with the other arm raised? :D
That would surely burn a bit...

You answered your own question, one is isometric the other is dynamic.

The main question is what are your goals for using this movement?

getting some pimping obliques? :p

The Internet ate my answer.

Pimping obliques = win.

Suitcase Deadlift, side bends and wood chops build said pimpyness.

Ether of above will help as a finisher.

Also good serratus makes obliques look pimpier. Serratus crunch, heavy overhead work and power snatch, FTW.

luckily i have decent serratus already. almost a decade of straight punches and pushups made sure of that :p.

i have no weights here, though, and am not sure how to improvise them, hence my going back to my one armed pushups, but i also want to work on my core. then i need to lose weight :p.

Do both- static Dynamic principle. Holds then movements for strength gains (that's what Ross says)

go do them with a weight plate and then come back and say that again ;)

Side bends can be done with anything heavy.

Wood chops with a kitchen chair HURT!

Other ideas for improvising is to go to the nearest building side and borrow heavy stuff. Sand bags, rocks and those things that go under the fences are handy.

You could try some lying or hanging windshield wipers. To make them more difficult add weight to your ankles.

windshield wipers look interesting. i think i'll try the lying ones.

*does not do windshield wipers*
