Hi everyone,

Things catch up to you don't they?

I've got a competition in just less than 3 weeks. Trouble is, I've also been ill the last 3-4 weeks and so my cardio is shot since I've been in bed and trying to take things easy. I'm just starting to come better now although I don't think I'm yet completely 100%.

So in the limited amount of time, what's the best way to improve cardio so I can make it through a match?

Competition is a single round of 6 minutes (longer than I'm used to) with the possibility of overtime if points are even (rare).

I'm going to try and spar to conditions as much as I can but there's another event the week before the comp which I'm not going to be able to attend but which MA classes are currently focused on.

What's the ruleset and is that 6 minutes a single continuous round?

Do a google search for "tabata protocol", that should help.

Good luck,

It's pure grappling and submissions. Similar to NAGA. Yup 6 min continuous.

I know what tabatas are but I'm not sure they are the best in this situation.

At this late stage all you can do is train your ass off and hope for the best. Do as much grappling as you can and hope it gets you there, you can't short cut fitness so just do the best you can at training until then.

This is semi right. Train like you would normally train for a match! Assuming you were consistent before you got sick you should be okay.

I remember reading from Joel jamieson that it takes approx 2 weeks for cardio improvements to show- so you should be able to make improvements if fitness is the only concern!

If you were fit before then three weeks is plenty of time. HIIT is your friend.
