Morning all.

I think I'm going to get myself some resistance bands mainly for karate training, but here's my question - how strong is strong? I'm assuming I should get an (extra) strong one for full body work (like working on explosive movement) and then a less strong one for punches and kicks etc.

would I be on the right track? what would you suggest?

Cheers!

Osu,

It is very hard to say without trying them: There is the resistance of the band, and there is the length of it compared to the range of motion you will use it for.
In China, I could only find fairly high resistance "bands" made of tire tube like material... because they are long enough, I can use them for full motion roundhouse kicks.
When I want more resistance, I use two bands.

For punches, I tie a knot to make them shorter.

Maybe someone with experience with the resistance codes of online available bands can help you better.

I found a lot of benefit using bands; they are also more practical than a kettlebell for travel ;)

Can't help but I always thought with resistance bands that you buy 3 group types light, medium and heavy, as different muscle groups require different resistance!? No idea if thats correct or not mind :/

I've got several from eBay. Similar to the type that comes with the wii. I'd have thought if you get 1.5m in blue and black they'll pretty much cover all eventualities
They're the flat ones that sell for about £3 with p&p. You might need handles though. Just that black nylon webbing stuff that comes with every portable electric item

I got mine from here:

and got the beginners pair of bands pack along with a door anchor (and because I had to wait for the order due to them being out of stock of one of the bands, they sent me 2 door handles for free). I would recomend them!

They look better quality than the eBay ones and I'm guessing the door anchor is good for kicking/punching?

I have a generic black band that works rather well... Its about 5 feet in length and I think its labeled as "heavy" resistance.

Having said that, the resistance of ANY band becomes heavy the further away its anchored :P

My favorite drill:

Here is a search result on Ross' blog for "bands"... (The custom handles is a pretty good article) Sorry I cant be of more help:

They are excellent quality - pretty much the same as the Ironmind ones, but much cheaper. I've never tried using the door anchor for punching or kicking, only pressing and pulling type moves, but I think it would work ok.

Go heavy unless you plan on using them for stretching or cardio.
