Is the partition your trying to boot to active? Also does your computer duel boot?

Are you using Lilo or Grub? Either you should be able to boot off cd, crt+alt+f2 to get a terminal, mount / . Then for grub just edit /etc/grub.conf . For Lilo edit /etc/lilo.conf and run lilo.

Ok, you haven't said much about what stage you're at ... can you get into either operating system or are you faced with a command prompt for a bootloader??

To get into windows from grub... assuming windows is in the first partition of the first hard disk.. then type:

root (hd0,0)
chainloader +1
boot

Windows should now begin to load... if you get an error sayin autochk.exe not found .. or xmnt2002.exe not found.. then you've hidden the windows partition and will need to go back to your grub command line and type :

unhide (hd0,0)

When in windows, go download a linux boot floppy and use it to bypass the grub bootloader and get into linux.. from here you can reconfigure the .conf files as said previously.

There are ways of booting directly into linux from the grub command line, by loading /vmlinuz and /initrd etc but i forget the commands!

Alternatively, you could try fdisk /mbr... to reset the MBR to the original windows configuration and use a boot floppy to get into linux and try installing a bootmanager from there.

Oh and if its lilo then i don't have a clue.. never used it before!

I had this problem... check your jumpers on your HD
